Youth Service Day: Hundreds of students pitch in for Beautify Fresno cleanup event

More than 750 students from public and private schools in the city hit the streets Saturday with easy-reach tools and trash bags, joining Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer’s Beautify Fresno program.

Dyer launched the program in January and the effort has been ongoing, targeting different neighborhoods to clean city streets of trash through a volunteer effort.

But Saturday’s campaign was different, and the mayor said it was the brainchild of San Joaquin Memorial High School student Matthew MonPere, who wanted his school to join the city in a Fresno Youth Service Day.

The idea grew, and students from throughout the city teamed up in the effort.

Sponsors of the event included Caglia Environmental, Eye-Q Vision Care, Me-n-Eds Pizza, Nalchajian Orthodontics, and OUTFRONT Media.
