Yucca Valley underclassmen shine again, this time in 48-0 win over Cathedral City

Michael Ramos Jr. threw five touchdown passes, ran for another and broke a major school record as Yucca Valley rolled to another big victory Friday against Cathedral City.

During the 48-0 win, Ramos broke the school's single-season passing yardage record that stood since 2017. Ramos now has 2,027 yards passing with one more regular season game and at least one playoff game remaining this season.

The win over the Lions moved the Trojans to 7-2 overall and 5-1 in the Desert Valley League. Yucca Valley will play Twentynine Palms in their annual rivalry game on Friday.

The Trojans can secure a share of the league title with a win and a Coachella Valley loss to Indio.

“It was a good game for us to get ready for the Bell Game against Twentynine Palms,” Trojans head coach Jeremy Johnson said.

Friday’s win was not just another big game for Ramos, the sophomore quarterback. Several teammates also shined, including junior running back Stephon Rogers, who scored a rushing touchdown, and junior receivers Javin Hudson and Myles Harper. Hudson recorded 148 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns, and Harper added 100 receiving yards and two scores, one of which came on a 34-yard interception return.

Junior receiver Malachi Harper added a touchdown as well.

Cathedral City (2-7, 2-4) will conclude its season Friday versus Desert Hot Springs.

Johnson, the Trojans’ coach, said that while he’s excited that each of those players are underclassmen and should be back next year, he’s particularly looking forward to seeing what they can do in the postseason.

“The good news,” Johnson said, “is that everybody’s healthy and we’re excited to be in the playoffs.”
