Yuletide: Christmas Favorites at the Norton exhibit on display for the holiday season

The R.W. Norton has a Christmas exhibit every year and this holiday season you can visit Yuletide: Christmas Favorites from the Norton until Jan. 2, 2022.

This special exhibit is curated from the museum's permanent collection and features both religious and secular art.

One of the standout piece on display is Charles Russell's only religious piece, Three Wise Men which is a 19th-century Russian icon showing the Twelve Great Feasts, WWI and WWII propaganda posts featuring seasonal messages and winter landscapes.

A very exclusive item that is only on display this time of year is the 14th-century Book of Hours (c. 1350), which may once have been in the possession of King Louis XI of France. This information is assumed from an inscription in the book and it was passed on from him to St. Francis de Paul in approximately 1482. The hand-illuminated book of prayers has French origins and includes depictions of The Nativity, The Adoration of the Magi, and The Annunciation just to name a few. Due to its importance and age, The Norton only allows it out of the archives once a year

Another Norton and fan-favorite is the 14-foot tall poinsettia tree that stands in the center of the museum and is haloed with hand-cut snowflakes made by local school children. The Norton invites families to make a holiday tradition of visiting to explore the exhibit, see the tree and enjoy a Christmas Scavenger hunt through the collections.
