Zachary Quinto becomes an ancient vampire in NOS4A2 time-lapse video

Zachary Quinto is no stranger to the make-up chair thanks to his time on the Star Trek franchise. But the actor’s transformation into science officer Spock looks like a walk in the park — or starship bridge — compared to the amount of work it took turning him into the aged version of Charlie Manx, the supernaturally-powered vampiric villain of the new AMC horror show NOS4A2 (premiering June 2).

“Manx is basically immortal,” says Quinto. “He enters into the lives of these young kids and takes them to Christmasland. But what happens in the journey is that the children become drained of their life force, they become these kind of vampiric, ghoulish creatures, and Charlie Manx is fed with vitality and energy and youth. So, depending on where he is in his journey, he could be a youthful version of himself or he could be quite a decrepit, withered version of himself. The makeup has been an incredibly valuable and important part of this experience. The first thing I said is that I could only really see myself doing this if we can get (makeup artist) Joel Harlow. Joel Harlow and I have worked together before, on Star Trek, movie and he’s done amazing work over the years. He’s just one of the best in the business, and one of the nicest guys, and so Joel was available and interested, and came in to design the makeup with me, for me, and has done an amazing job. There’s five different stages of Manx’s aging and he’s done just remarkable work. Between him and Cheryl Daniels, who’s designed all the wigs and is doing all the hair, it’s an incredible team to have. I don’t think it would have been as fully realized without them.”
