In 2017, two Republican senators from deep-red Southern states — Bill Cassidy of Louisiana and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina — introduced legislation that would have effectively killed Obamacare. Democrats Adrian Perkins and Jaime Harrison teamed up on Thursday to host a virtual health care roundtable on the third anniversary of the introduction of the Graham-Cassidy legislation. The bill, which was a last-ditch effort to win over Republican holdouts and kill the Affordable Care Act, never came up for a vote after it became clear to the GOP leadership that the Senate would not pass it.

Parts of Louisiana hit hard by Hurricane Laura have been left fighting off hordes of mosquitoes so vast they are killing farm animals by biting them in huge numbers. The animals are dying from the sheer number of bites, which leave them anemic and bleeding under the skin, as well as from the exhaustion caused by constantly moving to avoid the insects. According to Dr Craig Fontenot, a vet in the city of Ville Platte, the “vicious little suckers”, pushed out of marshes by the huge storm, have already claimed some 300-400 cattle, as well as a few horses.
The headless body of Kim Jong Un's executed uncle was displayed to senior North Korean officials, US President Donald Trump told the author of an upcoming book on the US president. Jang Song Thaek, the North Korean leader's uncle by marriage and a hugely powerful figure within the regime, was purged for treason and corruption in 2013, in what was widely seen as Kim mercilessly asserting his authority. "He killed his uncle and he put the body right in the steps," Trump said, in an apparent reference to a building used by senior officials.

Police in southern Louisiana put one officer on leave, removed two more from regular duty and launched an internal probe of their confrontation with two Black teens, officials said Thursday. Bystander video appeared to show at least one officer throwing punches as Lafayette police handcuffed a young Black male Saturday night at the Acadian Lanes Bowling Alley. Officers initially came to the scene answering calls that a person was in the parking lot with a gun, but they left after finding no one matching the description, Lafayette Police Sgt. Wayne Griffin told local media outlets.

Kristin Urquiza, the former Arizona resident who drew attention for a searing obituary of her father that slammed politicians' handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, called for President Donald Trump to resign Wednesday after reports he'd purposely downplayed the severity of the novel coronavirus. Trump knew weeks before the first confirmed U.S. coronavirus death that COVID-19 was highly contagious and more deadly than the flu, according to a new book by journalist Bob Woodward. Yet, when addressing the public, he claimed the virus was "under control" and would soon disappear. "The president is on record lying," Urquiza, whose father died of COVID-19 in June, told The Arizona Republic, part of the USA TODAY Network.

The Florida Supreme Court ordered DeSantis to appoint another judge by Monday, nullifying the appointment of Judge Renatha Francis. She would have been the first Caribbean-American justice to serve on the court.
The four former Minneapolis police officers charged in George Floyd's killing appear to be turning on each other, with each offering significantly different versions of the infamous arrest that acknowledge Floyd should not have been allowed to die that day but also deflect the blame to others. All have said in court documents that the relationship between the veteran officer - Derek Chauvin - and the others is at the heart of the issue, as each officer perceived their role, and who was in charge, quite differently. Chauvin was the officer shown with his knee on Floyd's neck as he struggled to breathe in videos of the ill-fated arrest.
Nora Dannehy, a top federal prosecutor working with U.S. Attorney John Durham on his investigation into the origins of the FBI's Russia probe, resigned from the Justice Department on Thursday, partially over concern that Attorney General William Barr is pressuring investigators to conclude their work prematurely for political purposes. Dannehy, a career prosecutor who has worked with Durham over decades and joined his team in spring of last year, submitted her resignation in an email Thursday night that made no mention of political pressure, the Hartford Courant first reported. Durham was appointed by Barr last year to investigate the origins of the FBI's Russia probe.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo assigned official government work to one of his top advisers through his wife, Susan, who used a private email account to relay his requests, according to newly released testimony. The spouse of a Cabinet member would not be expected to have a government email account if they are not employed by the government. But Susan Pompeo's influence over official personnel and activities at the State Department, as a private citizen, has raised concerns on Capitol Hill and within the department.
