Zeeland driver runs two red lights, collides with two vehicles, flees both scenes

ZEELAND — A local driver ran two red lights, hit two cars and fled both scenes shortly before 8 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 31.

First, deputies from the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office responded to a crash at I-196 and Main Ave. An investigation showed there was an additional crash at Byron and 84th Avenue.

As it turned out, a 61-year-old Zeeland man driving a 2004 Honda Pilot was traveling west on I-196 when he ran a red light and struck a 2021 Jeep driven by a 46-year-old Coopersville man.

The collision caused the Jeep to roll over. The driver sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital.

The Honda driver, meanwhile, fled the scene and ran another red light at Byron and 84th, this time colliding with a 2000 Suburban driven by a 26-year-old Zeeland man. That driver was uninjured.

The Honda driver again fled the scene, but only made it a short distance before “becoming disabled.” He got out of the car and fled on foot.

According to the release, Deputy Osbun and his K-9 partner, Kyan, responded to the scene to track the suspect. They tracked him into the city of Zeeland, where he was eventually located, taken into custody and lodged in the Ottawa County Jail.
