Zeeland East baseball tops West Ottawa - High school sports rewind

Zeeland East traveled to West Ottawa for a non-league doubleheader on Friday afternoon.  The Chix took game one by a score of 8-5.  Zeeland East used a huge seven-run 6th inning to come back and win.

Sophomore Evan Owens recorded his first career varsity win on the mound for the Chix.  Owens pitched 5 and 1/3 innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits, while striking out six. Easton Remick recorded the save.

Offensively, Trevor Raade led the way with three hits, two runs scored and two RBIs in the game.  Brenston Brown also added two hits and an RBI. The Chix improved their record to 19-9 on the season with the win.

In the second game, West Ottawa was leading by a score of 3-1 in the 5th inning when the game was called due to weather in the area.

Connor Tietema started on the mound for Zeeland East, pitching three innings and allowing three runs on three hits, while striking out four batters.  Aidan Jaworowski hit a double while Max Salas had a single and run scored.

Stats were not provided from West Ottawa.

Zeeland East travels to Muskegon to finish up their final league series on Tuesday.

BASEBALL

Hamilton 10, Fruitport 3

Joe Johnson, Thano Klett and Alex Welscott each had three hits for the Hawkeyes who pounded out 15 hits overall.  Brant Goodpaster and Blake Thomas each added two hits.  Johnson also had a great game on the mound throwing a complete game and striking out nine hitters without allowing any walks.

SOFTBALL

Holland Christian 5, West Ottawa 0

Freshman Kierea Smits had the win for the Maroons pitching a complete game shutout.  The Panther hitters couldn’t get their bats going. Smits only allowed one hit on the game while striking out 17, and walking one.

Shylah Dozeman took the loss for West Ottawa allowing five runs on five hits and four walks.

For the Maroons Hannah Knot had a double and run scored.  Smits helped her own cause with a single, run scored and RBI.  Baylee VanderZwaag had two singles on the day.

BOYS LACROSSE

Holland Christian 9, Spring Lake 8

Holland Christian beat Spring Lake 9-8 in the first round of regionals to advance to round two next Friday.

In a rematch of an early-season game, Holland Christian was able to turn the tables and win a thrilling match. Holland Christian was led by Andrew Chesser with three goals while Harris Shook, Teddy Hollebeek, Sam Perton, Will Overway and Aidan Delcalzo all joined in the scoring as well.

The Maroons were able to hold on to a late lead with big defensive stops, led by senior captain Parker Bareman and freshman goalie Keaton Melcher.

GIRLS SOCCER

Black River 2, Grand River Prep 2

Goals were scored by Ella Sligh and Harper Gerow.  Lily LaBurn had an assist.  Olivia Hayes made eight saves in goal for BR.

Zeeland East 3, Zeeland West 1

The Dux varsity soccer team lost to Zeeland East in the second round of the OK Green Conference Tournament on Thursday by a score of 1-3. The Dux found themselves down 0-2, before Abby Winn slipped a ball behind the Chix defense to Marissa Ybarra, who found the back of the net to bring the Dux within striking distance. However, despite many good looks and opportunities, they were unable to score.

Paige Westra scored twice for the Chix and Summer Boone-Sautter added the third.

"Great environment and atmosphere tonight. Zeeland East deserves a lot of credit for how well they executed their game plan. The difference in the game came down to finishing and making the right decisions in key moments," said Zeeland West coach Ben Hondorp. "Unfortunately for us, we couldn't find the back of the net and had difficulty capitalizing on the chances we generated in front of goal tonight. Thanks to our community for showing up in great numbers, we are truly blessed to have their love and support."

The Dux will host Reeths-Puffer on Monday in the final conference tournament game to determine third or fourth place. East will play Mona Shores.

BOYS GOLF

Zeeland East places fourth at OK Green Jamboree

The Chix traveled to Lincoln Golf Club near Whitehall to play in the final nine-hole Conference Jamboree of the season.  The team shot a score of 180 placing them fourth overall.

Leading the team with a personal best score for the season was Senior Gabe Jarvis with a 43, junior Jack Anderson also scored a 43, junior Brady Nykamp scored a 45 and junior Jake Middleton had a 49.

Wednesday the Chix will be playing in the 18 Hole Conference Tournament at Pigeon Creek.
