ZEELAND — There's a new person in charge of the Chix girls basketball program.

Earlier this week, Zeeland East announced it has hired Kale Maupin to become the new girls basketball coach. He takes over for Connor Hoke who had been in charge of the team for the past three seasons.

Maupin knows the game well, having spent time as a player and a coach. He was a four-year player for the basketball team at Carroll University, a Division III program in Wisconsin. For the last two seasons, he has served as the men's JV head coach and an assistant on the men's varsity coaching staff at Olivet Nazarene University, an NAIA school in Illinois.

Chix athletic director Josh Glerum knew during the interview process pretty early on that Maupin was the guy he wanted in charge. Despite being so young and having no experience as a high school head coach, Glerum was blown away by Maupin's ability to relate to players.

"In our conversations with coach Maupin we were struck by his leadership and ability to form relationships," Glerum said. "We are looking forward to Coach Maupin being part of Zeeland East Athletics and providing great experiences for the students in our girls basketball program."

The Chix basketball program had a bit of a down year a season ago, finishing the season with a 3-18 record. Though the team finished the season well, getting all three of their wins over the final four regular season contests.

Zeeland East has had historical success on the hardwood, earning double-digit wins in four of the last five seasons, including a COVID-shortened 2020-21 campaign. Maupin said he's thrilled to get the opportunity to help get the Chix back on track for the foreseeable future after an uncharacteristic down year.

"I am extremely excited to join the Chix family and Zeeland community," Maupin said. "I look forward to building a culture within the girl's basketball program that competes for championships and develops the entire student-athlete."

An introductory meeting with Maupin will take place shortly so families and players have the opportunity to speak face to face with their new coach.
