ZEELAND - Evan Berghorst proved he was a strong football player.

But he never really got the chance in track and field. With injuries and the COVID-19-canceled season, the Zeeland East senior wasn't able to show his prowess in the shot put and discus.

Now the Chix senior will have the chance, and not just this spring.

Berghorst signed a national letter-of-intent to accept a track and field scholarship at Cornerstone University, an NAIA program in Grand Rapids.

"Cornerstone has always stood out to me as a place where I wanted to continue my academic and athletic career," Berghorst said. "The throws coach, Jason Luke, has always invited me to practice and has helped me immensely with my form. I also have never heard a negative thing about Cornerstone, which led to have confidence in choosing the school.

"I hope to prove in college what I can do in this sport, as I was not able to in highschool, due to illnesses, and injuries. I'm very thankful to Cornerstone for giving me this opportunity."

Berghorst is the third in the family to play college sports. His oldest brother Johnathan played football at Central Michigan, while brother Adam played football and currently plays baseball at Michigan state.

Johnathan was a state champion in the shot put and Evan will look to add to the family legacy in the throws.
