Zeeland West's Skyler Geurink, Parker Holman are Holland Sentinel Football Players of the Year

ZEELAND - The Zeeland West football team has proved throughout its existance, that it will be hard to stop.

The Dux run a Wing-T offense and pound the ball inside and outside with their rushing attack.

Parker Holman and Skyler Geurink are the primary offensive weapons and they can really fly.

Holman was selected as The Holland Sentinel Offensive Player of the Year, while Geurink, who also excels as a defensive back, was named Defensive Player of the Year.

The duo led the Dux to a share of the OK Green Conference championship and a spot in the regional finals and were both named first-team all-state by The Associated Press in Division 1-2.

"This was a special season with a special team. We have played together since we started, so to have the success we did, this is a year I won't forget," Holman said. " I feel I improved in all areas from last year as a Sophomore on varsity, and am excited to get back to work to build off of the success of this year, both individually and as a team for my senior year."

Holman, a junior running back, had 133 rushes for 1,515 yards and 22 touchdowns. He averaged a stunning 11.4 yards per carry.

"He is a tremendous all=around football player," Zeeland West coach John Shillito said. "He is also a great blocker and was also sixth on team in tackles from his corner position on defense."

Teams simply could not stop his constant bursts up the middle.

When the Dux weren't going up the middle, they took the run to the outside, where Geurink thrived.

Geurink, a senior running back, had 151 rushes for 946 yards and 13 touchdowns, many of the big-play variety and several that were game-winners.

But while most teams were devastated by his offense, he quietly put together a stellar defensive season.

He had three interceptions from his cornerback position and his speed allowed him to close in on receivers, or quickly get up to the line to stop the run.

"He was en excellent corner, great against the pass and the run," Shillito said.

He was so good that teams stopped throwing to his side of the field nearly altogether, completly forcing a change in strategy for the offense on a weekly basis.

"This season meant a lot to me. In many different ways, this year I was put into a role as a leader and people looked up to me to make the big plays when we needed it," Geurink said. "But most importantly the friendships I will have when I walk away are something I will never forget."
