The Ukrainian leader stressed that Ukraine had submitted the second part of the completed questionnaire required to become a candidate for membership on May 9, a process which normally takes many months.

"… We have done everything in a matter of weeks… In June, I expect to receive an affirmative response regarding our country's candidate status for EU membership," the President said.

On February 28, Volodymyr Zelensky signed an application for Ukraine's accession to the EU. He said that after the full-scale invasion of Russia, Ukraine will apply to the European Union for immediate accession under a new special procedure.

On March 21, it became known that the European Commission had begun work on a conclusion on Ukraine's potential membership in the EU. According to Zelensky, the conclusion of the European Commission will be prepared within a few months. It will act as a recommendation for the EU Council to decide on the next steps.

During her visit to Kyiv on April 8, EC chief Ursula von der Leyen presented President Volodymyr Zelensky with a questionnaire on Ukraine's compliance with the Copenhagen criteria, a necessary step in gaining EU candidate status. Moldova and Georgia also received questionnaires, after Ukraine.

Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal has also stated that Ukraine expects to acquire the status of a candidate for EU membership no later than June 2022.
