Zelenskyy stated that Popko’s combat experience will help strengthen the defense and security of the capital.

Popko will be replacing Mykola Zhyrnov in the role. The relevant decrees were signed on Oct. 21, the Zelenskyy administration said.

The President's Office said Popko was born in Kyiv in 1961, graduated from the Kyiv Higher Combined Arms Command School, and was a platoon, battalion, unit commander, and chief of staff of a mechanized division. He also graduated from the National Defense Academy of Ukraine and held managerial positions. He has also served as part of the Ukrainian contingent in Iraq. From 2016-2019, he was the commander of the Ground Forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
