"Congratulations to the Prime Minister of Sweden [Magdalena Andersson – ed.] on the start of Sweden’s presidency of the Council of the European Union. I wish her success in implementing the priorities of the presidency! We are expecting further practical steps on the path of Ukraine’s integration into the EU," he stated.

As reported by European Pravda, Sweden took over the presidency at midnight on 1 January. Stockholm had announced in advance that its priority will be to deal with the consequences of Russia’s war against Ukraine.

The EU Council presidency lasts for six months, after which Sweden will be replaced by Spain.

In addition, on 1 January at midnight Croatia joined the Schengen area and became the 20th member of the Eurozone, abandoning its national currency, the kuna.
