Zelenskyy suggests UN assesses environmental impact from Russia’s war

The president’s message comes as the COP27 United Nations Climate Change Conference is being held in Egypt, on Nov. 6-18.

“The Russian war has already brought on energy and food crises,” said Zelenskyy.
“In less than six months, it destroyed three million hectares of forests in Ukraine! We are forced to find out daily what the situation is at the (Russia-occupied) Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant… I suggest that you support our initiative presented at the conference, namely – the creation of a global platform for assessing the damage to climate and environment from military actions.”

At least 90 heads of state and representatives of 190 countries are attending COP27, hoping to work out actionable solutions to the deepening global climate change crisis.

Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, and has been occupied by Russian forces since March 4. Several ZNPP facilities have been damaged by Russian shelling, and the station's employees are captives of the occupying troops.
