Milton election results: New board members chosen, treasurer position to change

MILTON − Benjamin Zoll won a seat on the select board and voters elected a new town treasurer while deciding to change the office from elected to appointive in Tuesday's town election.

Zoll, the vice dean for advancement at Brown University and a former town meeting member, topped the five-candidate field for two seats with 2,964 votes. Incumbent Richard Wells won a third term on the board with 2,744 votes.

Former warrant committee Chairman George Ashur finished third with 2,295 votes. Cindy Christiansen was fourth with 498 votes and Philip Johenning collected 119 votes in his second bid for a seat on the select board.

Arthur Doyle, who was chairman of the select board for the past year, did not seek reelection.

Voters approved changing the job of town treasurer from one elected annually by voters to an appointment by the town administrator by a vote of 3,414 to 1,739.

They elected Johanna McCarthy, of Highland Street, to fill the job until an appointment is made. McCarthy, who holds an accounting degree from Notre Dame and has two decades of experience working in the financial services industry, defeated Michael Keith Deane, of Howe Street, 3,674 to 1,246.

During the campaign, McCarthy said her priority as treasurer would be the transition from an elected to an appointive office.

James McAuliffe, who was the town treasurer for 14 years, is retiring.

In the contest for two school committee seats, Bao Qiu and Mark Loring were the winners. Qiu had 2,883 votes and Loring tallied 2,815. Former school committee member Leroy Walker placed third with 2,474 and Daniel O'Neil had 2,244.

School committee members Ada Rosmarin and Elizabeth White did not seek reelection.

Incumbent Cheryl Friedman Tougias won a new term on the planning board and will be joined by Jim Davis, a Centre Street resident who won the second available seat.

Planning board member Richard Boehler did not seek reelection.

Candidates reelected without opposition were assessor Brian Manning Cronin, select board member Roxanne Musto to her seat on the board of health, park commissioner Theodore Carroll and cemetery trustee James Coyne to a five-year term.

Three library trustees were unopposed for reelection: John Folcarelli, Kristine Hodlin and Sindu Meier.

Robert Powers, of Cliff Road, was unopposed for a five-year housing authority seat. Terence Driscoll of Centre Street was unopposed for a two-year seat on the cemetery trustees.

Except where noted, the offices carry a three-year term.

Town Clerk Susan Galvin said 5,840 voters cast ballots in the town election, a turnout of just over 28%, a little less than Galvin's prediction of 30 to 35%.
