Zombies, Run! for Android review

Zombies, Run! combines a running tracker with an engaging audio-based zombie game, challenging you to run more to avoid the zombie horde and (as an ongoing three-season storyline unfolds) gather items with which you can build a new settlement and rescue humanity. You've never seen anything like it before.

Pros

Unique experience: Zombies, Run! delivers an immersive storyline through excellently acted audio recordings, collectable in-game items, and a mini base-building game. Add to these real-time and overall tracking stats, achievements, and social integration for connecting with your friends, and you get a unique running game that can be more engaging than any horror film, especially if you use it after dark.

Effective fitness trainer: The unexpected zombie noises as well as the sense of urgency of the recordings are great motivators that make you run faster and further, especially with the Zombie Chases feature, a highly effective interval training mode. Thanks to its storyline, this app keeps you moving more than average fitness trackers.

Music playlist support: This version introduces an in-app music playlist, which lets you choose your running soundtrack -- the acted-out bits pop in when you expect them least.

Cons

Base-building fun but not essential: While the building side of the app, in which you use collected items to construct a base and keep the humans who have survived the zombie invasion alive, complements the audio story and the missions can be enjoyable, it doesn't give you the sense of achievement you get when escaping zombie hordes during your runs.

Infrequent crashes: Sometimes the screen freezes during tracking, and then, after some seconds, the app crashes. When it happens mid-run, it's annoying.

Bottom Line

Whether you run every day or only once in a while, Zombies, Run! can help you stay motivated. It's a unique and addictive running game with a wonderful story and all the fitness tracking features you'll need. Even if you're not into zombies, you should still try this unforgettable app.
