Zoot Suit Pachanga, Airport Appreciation, Pagan Pride and more this weekend

LAS CRUCES – Las Crucens have a unique mix of events to choose from this weekend, many of which are in support of are nonprofit organizations like El Caldito Soup Kitchen and the Salvation Army of Las Cruces Corps.

Las Cruces Airport Appreciation Day

Airport Appreciation Day will be held at the Las Cruces International Airport Saturday, providing members of the community opportunities to view aerial demonstrations and various aircraft on display. Two King Air aircraft from Biggs Army Air Base will be on display, as well as Virgin Galactic’s aerobatic training plane. A one-man helicopter demonstration is also scheduled for 1 p.m.

Classic cars and other vehicles will be featured, and food trucks will be on site. And for $75, flights over the Mesilla Valley will be offered in a Pilatus PC12/45.

Admission and parking is free. Events will be held between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., Saturday at 8950 Zia Blvd.

Empty Bowls

The Potters’ Guild of Las Cruces is hosting the 30th annual Empty Bowls fundraiser in support of El Caldito Soup Kitchen Friday. Over 1,000 bowls have been made by hand over the past year in preparation for the event. Attendees will choose one bowl and be served soup from nearly 40 participating area restaurants. All proceeds go toward helping the soup kitchen.

Empty Bowls is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday at St. Paul’s Methodist Church, 225 W. Griggs Ave. Tickets are $20.

Zoot Suit Pachanga & Car Show

New Mexican culture will be on display Saturday at Klein Park during the annual Zoot Suit Pachanga & Car Show. Live music, a classic car and bike show, food and craft vendors and prizes will all be part of the day’s festivities. Attendees are also welcome to dress in zoot suits or pin up costumes. Live music and ballet folklorico performances will provide entertainment.

The party starts at 11 a.m. and goes until 7 p.m., Saturday at Klein Park, 155 N. Mesquite St.

Las Cruces Pagan Pride Day

Community members are invited to celebrate Pagan Pride Saturday at the Pioneer Women’s Park. Practicing pagans of all beliefs are welcome in this safe space to mingle with their fellow community members. Those interested in learning more about pagan belief systems are also invited to join.

Ceremonies and vendors will be held at the park. Organizers are also asking that attendees bring clothes and toiletry donations in support of Community of Hope.

Pagan Pride Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday at Pioneer Women’s Park, 500 W. Las Cruces Ave.

Trinity Site Open House

Trinity Site, where the first atomic bomb was tested in 1945, will be open to the public Saturday. This is one of two dates per year when White Sands Missile Range opens the gates for visitors to travel up range.

Visitors will have the chance to walk to ground zero and see the obelisk marking the place where the bomb was detonated. A shuttle will also take people two miles away to the Schmidt/McDonald Ranch House where the bomb’s plutonium core was assembled.

Stallion Range Center Gate near San Antonio, New Mexico will be open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The gate is located five miles south of US Highway 380, 12 miles east of San Antonio and 53 miles west of Carrizozo. Visitors will be able to drive through the gate unescorted to the historic site. The site closes at 3:30 p.m.

Salvation Army Harvest Festival

The Salvation Army of Las Cruces Corps is hosting its seventh annual festival Sunday, Oct. 16. Free food will be provided to attendees, along with prizes, games, an obstacle course, bounce house, live music and more. Admission is a donation of one canned good. Festivities are from 3-6 p.m., Sunday at 1590 California Ave.
