Olympic champion Alexander Zverev will miss Germany's Davies Cup qualifiers match against Hungary at the weekend due to illness, the German tennis federation DTB said on Wednesday.

Zverev is still suffering from an infection that had already weakened him during his defeat against Daniil Medvedev at the Australia Open semi-finals last week, DTB said.

"We hoped until the very end that Alexander would be able to support us against Hungary after his strong performances in Australia. Unfortunately, there wasn't enough time for him to get fit in time," Germany team manager Michael Kohlmann said. "Now we have to stand together as a team to compensate for his absence."

Maximilian Marterer will replace Zverev, joining the team alongside Jan-Lennard Struff, Dominik Koepfer, Tim Pütz and Kevin Krawietz.

The winning nations from the qualifiers will advance to the 2024 Davis Cup Finals, where they will join the 2023 finalists (Australia and Italy) and the two wild cards (Britain and Spain) in a 16-nation line-up.
