Sarah Palin slams Newsweek for giving ‘conspiracy kook writer’ Andrew Sullivan cover story

    Palin, Sullivan (AP/Newsweek)

Like many conservatives, Sarah Palin is up in arms over this week's controversy-baiting Newsweek cover story by Andrew Sullivan, who asks, "Why Are Obama's Critics So Dumb?" Unlike many conservatives, Palin's beef with Sullivan is personal.

"Know what's truly 'dumb'?" Palin wrote in a Twitter message to Newsweek. "Giving a cover story to the Trig Truther conspiracy kook writer who thinks I didn't give birth to my son."

The former Alaskan governor and vice presidential candidate is referring to the birther-like conspiracy theory--fueled by Sullivan and others--that she is not Trig Palin's real mother, and that Palin "faked the pregnancy to avoid embarrassment for her daughter [Bristol] or for political gain or some combination of reasons."

    Sullivan's response?

I have no idea, as I have said time and time again, whether Sarah Palin gave birth to Trig, and have never written such a thing. All I ever asked for a person who could become president was some basic evidence for her insane story, like medical records that most candidates have no problem providing. She never provided any, and preferred to withdraw from seeking public office rather than do so. Of course, no response to the substance. She doesn't do substance. Neither, it seems, does much of the rightwing blogosphere.

The cover story drew the ire of conservative bloggers in particular. Joel Pollak wrote what amounts to the official conservative blogger response on Andrew Breitbart's Big Government in post entitled, "Why Is Andrew Sullivan So Dumb?"

"You'd have to be stupid, fanatical, and dishonest to argue—as Trig Truther Sullivan does—that Barack Obama's failures are part of an ingenious 'long game' that is destined to succeed," Pollak wrote. "If this is the best Obama's supporters can do, Obama's only hope for re-election is the weak Republican field."

During a Fox News segment on Sullivan's article on Monday, the network blurred out Sullivan's name when showing the Newsweek cover.

"They are far too afraid to have me on to defend it," Sullivan wrote. "I've been on the blacklist for years. Like Ron Paul, too dangerous for Fox."

As you read this story and comments, just remember what George Carlin said. "Think about how stupid the average person is, then realize that half of them are stupider than that." Then realize they can all vote.

@Footer: that is the most sensible thing I've seen written from a Texan.
@M23: Well, since there's no reason people got any smarter in 4 years, I guess we can look forward to 4 more years of Obama. Unless, of course, they got even stupider. Then we might get a repugnican elected.

I'll probably get thumbs down for this, but Twitter is for twits, and anybody who has ever studied journalism knows the three rules of journalism are accuracy, accuracy, accuracy. If you can't prove it, don't print it.
      • A Yahoo! User 4 mths ago
There are many stories that start out like this one, especially when the people involved refuse to provide documents that would prove one way or another what is accurate.

Former Mayor Palin has NEVER produced any thing, other than her patented whine about the Lame Stream Media.
      • James Smith 4 mths ago
I guess your point about accuracy isn't all that accurate.. There is little that's accurate in the media anymore. For example the UC Davis OWS crowd that got pepper sprayed.. The media didn't tell you the OWS crowd circled the police then sat on the ground refusing to move and let the officers out... They then got pepper sprayed... I can give you endless examples of inaccurate stories in the media../.

Today, all you have to do to Smear a person in public is plant the seed of doubt. You dont have to have any evidence, just the doubt will do.
      • Anonymous 4 mths ago
That's always been true, though. Political writer Anna Ella Carroll (back in the 19th century) once said that there were two "courts" in America--the bar of justice and the bar of public opinion--and no evidence is necessary to change public opinion.
      • Mr 4 mths ago
You can thank Fox News for that.

Palin is an idiot and does a great job o smearing herself
    • Graylock  •  4 mths ago
There once was a day when news stories had to be double verified. Today, any rumor or idle idiotic thought by a "news person" becomes front page. Sad, very sad.
      • Roman Moronie 4 mths ago
Yeah, Fox News has a loose affiliation with the truth.
      • dave 4 mths ago
Thanx Graylock... as I've said all along, with the fast paced high gear internet mentality in the News Industry, the importance of the truth is overridden by the need to get the scoop first!

    • masondixon  •  3 mths ago
If Sarah Palin wanted to really try to embarrass Sullivan, she should do a witnessed DNA test for maternity along with Trig and Bristol, and have the press attend the grand opening of the announcement of results.

When the rest of the world reads things like this is it any wonder that they look at us and decide that Americans are so preoccupied with what the media thinks that they cannot focus on the real issues dragging thier country down. The American media outlets are doing thier fair share of making all of us look like we cant figure out whicxh shoe to tie first let alone elect someone who is more concerned with reestablishing integrity and credibility to our own government. As a US citizen which battle front do we take on first a government who is so out of touch with blue collar and grass roots Americans or an out of control self-exalting media . Or a financial system so greedy they absolutely do not care who ends up on the street as long as they get our money first. A good example of the effects of all three HHHmmm I think it was called the Roman Empire. Did'nt and correct me if I'm wrong that colapse. If we get back to being patriots and standing on the Constitution we will avoid history repeating itself.

I think you are absolutely right Samuel. And in my opinion, the first step is to outlaw lobbyism (and send all lobbyists to jail). Once we get that mess out of the way we can tackle the dummies in Congress (and the dummies attempting to get in there). And once there is no money to be made in Congress only the people that really want to serve will be left..

The media is precisely why we have the caliber of politicians we do. Who wants to have their children pilloried (Amy Carter, Bristol Palin) rumors about their place of birth (Obama), their antics in college (Bush), their tax returns, their divorces (Gingrich Kerry) under a magnifying glass? No sane person.
Only the megalomaniacs, the self absorbed, and the incredibly rich would. And thats what we have.

Stories like this one and the Kardashians always get a lot of readers and responses, while stories about our national debt and economy get a tiny fraction of the readers.

No wonder we are in trouble as a country!

I am amazed that people can write anything in the news or magazines and everyone believes it. Once upon a time, and this is no fairy tale, we used to have reporters who investigated the facts and when it went to print, or was reported in the news, you could bet it was accurate. Now, regular news is no different than super Market rags like Enquirer. Dumb people keep believing in this crap without verification of any facts. Look at the birthers with Obama!!

Today's journalism is just different degrees of lying and manipulation. We would be better off without them. They forgot what the words truth, integrity, and honesty mean. They are for sale to the highest bidder.
    • Ron  •  4 mths ago
Ok I'm probably going to make some of you mad but oh well, it's just how I feel...........Americans any more are dumb, we care more about sports, stars or reality TV shows than what is going on in our country. Our education system keeps getting cut while our government that WE elect in to office hands out Billions of dollars so that other countries can have good education, jobs and health care just to name a few. We have a news system (NBC, CBS, ABC, MSMBC, Time, Newsweek along with local and National newspapers that instead of giving us the whole story they sugar coat it, twist it around or not cover it at all leaving us the public completely ill informed so that their favorite political person looks better than what they really are, but we keep supporting them anyway. The media keeps playing us against one another to distract us from what is really going on. WAKE UP AMERICA!
    • j  •  4 mths ago
WHY did I look at this story !!!
    • Arnold  •  4 mths ago
On November 23, 2010: "Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and the Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, announced that Russia and China will use their own national currencies for bilateral trade, instead of the declining U.S. dollar. The move is aimed to further improve the relations between Beijing and Moscow and to protect their domestic economies in the conditions of the world financial crisis. The trading of the Chinese ‘Yuan’ against the Russian ‘Ruble’ has started in the Chinese interbank market and the Russian foreign exchange market."

Keep squabbling. When the US dollar falls as the world's reserve currency maybe all this political infighting will buy you a loaf of bread.
