    EU bans Iran oil imports

The 27-member European Union voted Monday to ban imports of Iranian oil, and to sanction some transactions with Iran's Central Bank.

The action, passed at a foreign ministers' meeting in Brussels, immediately bars EU member states from signing any new oil contracts with Iran, and orders the phasing out of existing contracts by July 1.  The EU-bloc previously constituted the second largest customer for Iranian oil after China.

"I hope Iran will respond positively and will come back to the negotiating table," European Union High Representative for Foreign Policy Catherine Ashton said in announcing the action.

But "given the EU's serious and deepening concerns over the Iranian nuclear programme, the Council today broadened the EU's restrictive measures against that country," the European Union said in an accompanying statement (.pdf).

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner welcomed the European action. The measures "are another strong step in the international effort to dramatically increase the pressure on Iran," they said in a joint statement Monday.

Clinton last week had urged Iran to respond to a proposal for new international talks on curbing its nuclear program, or face mounting pressure.

"We all are seeking clarity about the meaning behind Iran's public statements that they are willing to engage, but we have to see a seriousness and sincerity of purpose coming from them," she said at a news conference with her German counterpart Guido Westerwelle at the State Department Friday.

A U.S. official briefed on the effort to execute the Iran oil sanctions told Yahoo News Sunday that the measures are being implemented as world demand for oil is going down, and thus should be able to be phased in without a spike in oil prices. But markets do not always act logically, he noted.

"World demand for oil is going down," the official said. "There is a slowdown in the European economy, the China economy is softening...We are expecting slower growth in Russia and India."

Meantime, he added, as demand is going down, more oil supplies are coming online in places like Libya, Iraq, and Angola. But he noted, "the press, governments and companies don't [always] understand how these contracts work. It's a complicated issue. Contracts need to expire. ... The grades [of oil] from different suppliers are different. So they need to check with their refiners...It takes time."

Separately, the Pentagon said Sunday that a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier, the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln, had entered the Strait of Hormuz without incident, despite previous Iranian rumblings about closing the Strait, a key energy transport hub.

Meantime, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced Monday that its inspectors would head to Iran at the end of the month.

"A senior IAEA team will visit Iran from 29 to 31 January 2012," the UN atomic watchdog agency said in a statement Monday. "The overall objective of the IAEA is to resolve all outstanding substantive issues."

The IAEA team to Iran will be led by the Deputy Director General for Safeguards, Herman Nackaerts, and will include the Assistant Director General for Policy, Rafael Grossi.

"The Agency team is going to Iran in a constructive spirit, and we trust that Iran will work with us in that same spirit," IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano said."

The price of oil should be driven by supply and demand not speculation. The price is manipulated to line the pockets of crooks.
      • AFPilot 4 mths ago
And that is what this is all about, Nuke program is a distraction, the real reason for the embargo...money, anyone who says different is lying!

Big oil Strikes again. How many people this time? For how much oil? Yeah, "War IS a Racket".
      • gauchemar 4 mths ago
Supply and demand make the manipulation work. If there were abundant supply in production, especially from non-OPEC countries, OPEC wouldn't be able to manipulate prices. Only with relatively tight supply is their limited control of production enough to manipulate prices.

And yes, it is largely an OPEC game (with some cooperation from other oil-exporting states). Times have changed since the 1970s; now most of the world's petroleum production is in the hands of state-owned enterprises, not private Big Oil. The Saudis in particular can drop oil prices with the turn of a spigot. Ironically, it is the very inefficiency of state-run operations that keeps the market from being flooded with oil from Venezuela, Mexico, Brazil and elsewhere, helping keep prices high. Private speculation can drive a short-term spike (and/or trough) but the big-picture game is OPEC.

"World demand for oil is going down," the official said.

Um....... so WHY does the price of gas continue to go UP?!
      • Larry 4 mths ago
A company can charge any price they want. IF you think it is too high, don't buy! When a large number of customers no longer make the purchase the cost will be lowered to regain the market. This is the Capitalist system that you love so much.
      • Jim 4 mths ago
The world is at peak production. We're hitting the plateau of max production bumping up against higher demand. We can't increase production more than a bare fraction, and it's only going to drop from here. A decrease in demand is the result (and cause) of a shrinking economy - so that's not a pretty solution, either.

The price and difficulties are only going to increase from here. It's why we're making such a big deal about Iran - it's another coming resource war. This isn't about nuclear weapons - it's the excuse.

Iran says they are ready to engage and Hillary says to wait to see if they are serious. What is wrong with that idiot? I say to heck with Iran and its oil. The US needs to get less dependent on China and all the others.

The problem isn't that we need Irans oil, the problem is that if Iran develops a nuke they could use it on Isreal, Europe, or even here and we wouldn't know until its to late.

This proves the 'market' is a myth manipulated by business for profit "measures are being implemented as world demand for oil is going down" - if demand is down then so should prices but the price numbers on my gaspump keep going up not down

Let's see: The demand for oil is going down. Hmm...law of supply and demand:
when demand goes down, prices go down. We have somehow managed to circumvent one of the basic laws of economics! Only in the great US of A could this be accomplished.

With the emergence of oil deposits and reserves in the US, we have the capability to extract and produce oil for less than 40 dollars a barrel...why then are we paying so much more for it overseas.......

      OK , OK
      I'm an Iranian.
And I don't like our GOV's activities like 99% of other people I know
And I think I can tell you some facts that will help you judging this situation:
1.Iranians are not Arabs, They are Indy-Aria, just like Germans. Iran is not a desert, and Iran don't have any camel or etc... in fact most of Iran is so like turkey in climate.
2.Iranian people don't hate Americans, or any other country's people or GOV's... in fact, if they hate someone, they are Chinese, not Americans
3.Yes, We are living in a fu**ed up country, but you Ideas about Iran and Iranians are so wrong, its not "that" fu**ed up, only a bit!
4.As you can see how much our politicians are mad, this bans will only affect people, not them, so they would continue enjoying their behaviors toward us, so we will be fu**ed up more, and that's a goddamn loop that never gonna end
5.never compare a Persian to an Arab, plz, for god-sake!

Obama is playing cards with National Security to redistribute funds into areas of greater concern to him. He is not looking to cut spending. He considers Military spending cuts access to easy-money. Perhaps there are a few nice renewable energy projects coming up that need an infusion of taxpayer dollars so they can payout contracted bonuses before they declare bankruptcy.

Clinton did the same thing. At one point, 25% of the entire F15 fleet was grounded for lack of spare parts, and the generals said if we had to fight an action the size of Panama during his presidency, we would not have had the resources to do it. The next president, of course ( Bush ) had to spend a ton of money to rebuild the tattered military weakened by Clinton, which gave the Democrats a great excuse to criticize his spending levels.
      .

Thus a pattern develops which Obama seems to be aware of: cripple the military, forcing the next ( Republican ) president to spend a lot of money restoring it.
