The Queen of England faces a pay freeze

The Queen of England faces budget cuts. (AFP)

The Queen of England may be forced to scrimp on repairs to her palaces and lavish public appearances under a recently passed British law expected to reduce her income over the next several years.

"The squeeze on the monarch's income is likely to delay a backlog of repairs to royal palaces," the Daily Telegraph's Matthew Holehouse reported Monday. "There will be no extra money from the taxpayer to pay for the court of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, who are rapidly emerging as global stars." (Queen Elizabeth's son, Charles, Prince of Wales, will continue to kick in to pay the salaries for staff for Prince William and his new bride, the Sunday Times, however, reported.)

Under the new legislation, which passed into law six weeks ago, England will employ a new formula for calculating the Queen's taxpayer-funded allowance, as Americans might put it. "Under the new arrangement, the Queen receives 15 percent of the profits made over two years from the Crown Estate, whose portfolio includes Regent Street, Windsor Great Park and more than half the country's shoreline," Holehouse notes.

Last year, thanks to general stagnation in the UK economy, the old calculation netted royal revenues of around £32.1m--down more than half from the £77.3m high-water mark that the Crown Estate enjoyed during the boom years of 1991-92.

The decline in royal income has prompted rare muttering from the royal bean-counters. "Sir Alan Reid, keeper of the privy purse, warned last summer that it would be 'very difficult for overall expenditure to fall much further without impacting on the Royal Household's activities in support of the Queen and the long-term health of the estate,'" Holehouse reported.

But in characteristic fashion, the royals themselves seem to be keeping a collective stiff upper lip about the gloomy forecasts--and exploring options for diversifying their revenue streams. "Buckingham Palace is likely to boost its efforts to raise money from commercial sources, or to cut back on public appearances by the royal family," Holehouse wrote. It's unlikely, in all events, that the Queen and her immediate circle of relations will pursue the revenue-netting strategies that have won no small amount of notoriety for the commoners who have lately strayed into the Royal Family's orbit--reality TV contracts, fashion merchandising endorsements, and the like.

Instead, as Holehouse notes, tradition will once again trump the passing travails of the royals: "The sums the Queen will receive will depend on the Crown Estate's trading performance."

      Dear Congress,

We regret to inform you that due to budget constraints the American people can no longer afford to pay you at your current salary. We will be requiring a 50% decrease effective immediately, and remain in effect, until 2012 when you will be given your outright release.

      Sincerely,
      We the People

Should a member of Congress make $174,000 for the job they have done?
Tell them what you think and read some of the comments.

They need to work hourly and not salary, $10.00 an hour, overtime after 40 hours worked, NOT overtime after 8 hours work (only Union jobs pay overtime after 8 hours worked and the Republicans are against ALL Unions). I also read on these vines, a lot of the people here are upset that State and Federal workers are getting a retirement paid by the American Tax Payer, and Republican Politicians also feel that these people should not get a retirement paid by American Tax Payer, SO that also means THEM, because when they retire they are paid with American Tax Payer Money each month and they DO NOT need to get that wonderful pension on AMERICAN TAX PAYER'S DIME. The President gets $300,000 a year for LIFE from the American Tax Payer, along with Senators, and Congressmen/women. THAT HAS TO STOP!!!! They need to pay for food, gas, car insurance, healthcare, rent, car note (no more state own cars/trucks), etc. Then they will know how it is like to live like an average american with an average paying job, paying BILLS.

Doesn't you employer pay for all or some of your insurance ? Also, your employer should be paying for business related travel, if you have any...in the case of Congress, we are the employer...so reasonable costs are our responsibility. Same goes for a reasonable pension. I don't know about Congress, but regular federal employees pay about 7% of income into that retirement plan plus they have the opportunity to contribute to a plan similar to a 401K - paying in more of their own income into a savings plan. If you are so jealous of the retirement options, why don't you get a federal job ???

Too bad all our "queens" in Washington D.C. don't take a pay cut. They act like royalty, but grovel our money like dumpster divers.
      • Terry 5 mths ago
Apparently there are a lot of people that like the bribes (welfare payments) given to them by their elected officials. When the bill comes due they just ask the same elected officials to look for more money. Nevermind there isn't enough money to pay the bill. We can't even borrow enough to pay now.
      • Steve S 5 mths ago
No need to diss dumpster divers like that.
      • Danielwright2311 5 mths ago
they are royalty, whats the diffrence? the queen forces others to give them money for no good reason, and so does our goverment, the only diffrences are the tittles have changed and there time in power, but, the irs, never looses power.

    • HaHaHell  •  Huntsville, United States  •  5 mths ago
Now taking applications for congress. The salary is $50,000 non-negotiable. Only applicants that have never held the position need apply.
    • Bryan  •  St. Louis, United States  •  5 mths ago
I have a great idea------ let's start a nation wide petition to reduce the congress and senate pay to $75,000 a year and they pay their own expenses, their own health care and retirement!!!! If they truly want to serve their country for the betterment of our nation they will jump on it, if not I know several people that CAN!!! Furnish them with a car with no driver, no free airplane service if they want to fly then they pay for it out of their own pockets, no special interest money or gifts, if received then they will have to pay income tax on it like the rest of us and loose their job. No loopholes for anything !!! How many millions would it save this country???? For those who voted to sell our soul to china, tax all imports from China. China has been outfitting our enemies for years and we are paying them to do so !!!! Stop with the greed before it's to late, if it's not already!!

    • LittleHungryMusic  •  5 mths ago
So, all you senators and goveners, are you gonna show you got more class than the Queen and do likewise? Or is it true the British really do have more class than us?

We have our royalty -- NFL, MBL, NBA stars and owners. Hollywood. Media. Wall Street. Doctors and lawyers. We subsidize them, revere them, lavish praise and our wealth on them (that's how they got wealthy). In this sense, we're much worse than the British.
    • diana  •  Morgan City, United States  •  5 mths ago
Also since the congress members such as Reid and Polesky in the past have used inside info to pad thier pockets they need to cut their pay and cut some jobs entirely
