    American green card? No thanks

A USCIS sample green card from 2010 (AP)Half as many people applied to enter a diversity lottery to receive an American green card this year than last.

Last year, 15 million people around the world entered the State Department-run "diversity lottery," which gives out up to 55,000 green cards each year to people who live in countries with low immigration rates to the United States. (To enter the lottery, applicants must have at least a high school education and two years' recent work experience.)

The Department says the number of entrants plummeted to 8 million this year because Bangladesh--which last year was home to more than 7 million visa lottery applicants--was taken off the list of qualifying countries. That's because it now sends more than 50,000 immigrants to America each year.

But Muzaffar Chishti, the director of NYU law school's Migration Policy Institute office, says he thinks the Department's much-publicized computer glitch last year might have also lowered participation.

"I think that event discouraged a lot of people from applying," Chishti said. Even though Bangladesh was taken off the list, other countries--Poland and South Sudan--were added to the list, suggesting that there should have been more visa applications.

Last May, the State Department mistakenly told 22,000 people all over the world that they had won the visa lottery. Nearly two weeks later, the Department told those people were that they were not in fact able to live and work in the United States, blaming a computer error. "I can't believe that this happened ... It was the most beautiful time of my life for me, my husband and our 4 months baby ... I was happy because i had something beautiful to dream about," wrote Anisa Tane of Albania on one of the many online forums where the 22,000 would-be immigrants congregated to complain. Some of them tried to sue in a class action, but a judge denied their claim.

Chishti says the high unemployment rate in America may have also discouraged applicants."This has been happening with all our immigration streams," he said. "Given the nature of the economy and the labor market, less and less people feel confident that if they come to the U.S. they'll find a job."

Recent data highlighted in the New York Times finds that the sour U.S. economy has also dramatically driven down illegal immigration from Mexico. More than 500,000 illegal immigrants from Mexico entered each year between 2000 and 2004, but that number plunged to 100,000 by 2010, according to estimates.

When the law makers are not enforcing the laws why would anyone need a green card ? We should deport the people who won't do their job and won't let the police do their job. You know the Greedy Politicians.
      • Carl 6 mths ago
It is not the law makers job to enforce the laws. That is the responsibility of the execute branch. Neither republican nor democrat presidents have done their job.

I think you didn't read the article. They are not coming that much. The illegal alien problem is due to the US war on drugs.

If the New York Times can count the illegals crossing from Mexico, then why can't the U.S. do the same, stop them and send them back??
      • Jerry 6 mths ago
Too many times the subject of "Green Cards" is targeted solely on Mexican citizens, and not based on ALL of the citizens from OTHER COUNTRIES! Maybe if we could FIX the Southern Border, there would be more room for people from other Countries to get accepted?
      • Kevin 6 mths ago
So what if caught they get a bus ride back to the border and are back at work
        in a few days
      • More4Me 6 mths ago
Oh course Jerry. Try telling that to the U.S government.

Look at California. Illegals get free medical, tuition for college, welfare, etc..... Brown just passed the college tuition one a couple of months ago.
      • brenda 6 mths ago
that's right, if they have a green card that means they have to be on their own here, I know I have a nephew in law him and his brothers came here the legal way and they have had to pay the government thousands of dollars just to get the green card, plus when they have the green card they can't apply for foodstamps medicade or anything that has to do with government help, he got layed off from his job and he couldn't even get unemployment. so that is why most of them come in illegally. What bothers me, is when they do come in here, they get several differnt id's so they can go to different counties around where they live and get food stamps, I know this also cause of a place where I worked employed a bunch of them, and had to fire them cause they forgot what social security card they used to apply for the job, and when asked they put the wrong one down on paper, so they were lying on their applications. so they got fired. So our government doesn't keep up with them cause they have no man power to keep track of all these people. they need to do fingerprint analysis or eye scans on them so our goernment will stop giving out double, triple sometimes quaduple the benefits.

How can you tell the number of illegal immigrants in our country, when our law enforcement cannot even ask to see for legal documents to check if they are here legally? Only in America, it is against the law to ask illegal aliens, invaders for proof of citizenship, or go after employers that employ them for cheap labor, pay them in cash, and taxpayers paying for their ER and medical visits and their made USA babies births and education! We all need to pretend and give the blind eye when we see illegal aliens. Our own federal government suing our state governors and taxpayers, that want to end illegal aliens invading our land. Don't ask, don't tell is very much applied in our country, while our country is going down fast to freeloading, financial welfare bankruptcy. Retired Americans paying higher premiums, living them very little on their retirement checks to survive on, to pay for those that don't! The elderly are being frightened, they will loose their social security benefits after working over forty years of their life, and are now in their eighties. Who needs visa cards to enter America, when you can just jump the border and not report or answer to any government official? Illegal aliens have nothing to loose, but face deportation, and then in time return.
      • Rebecca 6 mths ago
It is so approved being illegal, that illegal aliens actually claim their illegal status on their census forms.

Of course fewer are applying. Illegals are beginning to have more rights than American citizens so why bother with the paperwork.
    • Jess  •  6 mths ago
Why would they bother? The borders are wide open and we have "sanctuary cities" welcoming the criminals with open arms so they can breed litters of anchor babies for the American tax payers to support!
    • Peter  •  6 mths ago
Why apply for a green card, when you can just sneak in and get all the benefits of a citizen - or more!
      DOH!!!
