    The Sideshow

Alleged Woolly mammoth (or maybe just a bear) spotted in Siberia (Video)

The British tabloids are having fun today with two videos reportedly showing mythical creatures at play in otherwise ordinary settings.

In the first video, a large creature is seen crossing a river in the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug region of Siberia. The Sun reports that a Russian government worker shot the video and claims it shows a Woolly mammoth, a creature whose heyday passed more than 10,000 years ago. And while this is almost certainly not an actual mammoth, there is some historical evidence to tantalize cryptozoologists. It turns out that some mammoths actually did survive beyond the extinction of their brethren, living on Wrangel Island off the coast of Siberia until about 3,500 years ago.

But if you watch the video closely, you will see that what is supposed to be the creature's trunk, or possibly its tusks, appears to be quite flaccid. Some viewers speculate that the furry creature in the video is nothing more than a bear carrying a large fish in its mouth. Others have surmised that it is an elephant, the mammoth's genetic cousin, lost in the woods.

For more legitimate Woolly mammoth goodness, check out this fascinating article on attempts to clone one. There are some who think scientists could successfully clone a mammoth in as little as five years.

Our second video has more arcane roots and makes an even more dubious claim.

In this video, an object can be seen slithering through the ice of the Jokulsa River in Iceland. If you believe everything you hear, this is definitive evidence of the Lagarfljot worm of local legend. As the Telegraph explains, the Lagarfljot has its roots in an old Icelandic myth. As the story goes, a man once attached the worm to a golden ring, hoping it would cause the ring to grow in size. But when he returned the following morning, it was the worm that had expanded to monstrous proportions. Leaving the ring attached to the worm, he threw it into the Jokulsa River, where it continued its exponential expansion.

Most likely it's nothing more than a piece of flotsam being pulled downstream by the current. After all, would even a mythic worm really be trudging through the ice on the surface of a frozen lake?

If you need a dose of real ET-on-earth type news, catch up on the Russian scientists who have successfully drilled down into an ancient Antarctic lake, which has existed undisturbed under two miles of ice for more than 20 million years. The very grounded speculation on Lake Vostok offers the potential of not only new discoveries here on Earth, but a better understanding of how extraterrestrial life may exist in the frozen lakes of places like Jupiter's moon Io.

Meet sexy women and rich men. Sham!! Scam!!! Sick of this crap... while I hate Ohio State the bottom line is ALL the Big Schools with big time sports programs "work out deals" with these kids. Stop the #$%$ Many of them cannot or will not learn and are only in school because of their athletic ability. Football brings the revenue to cover all the rest of the programs so stop the scam and just pay them to play. The NFL and NBA unlike MLB/NHL have no minor leagues or traning camps for these people. Let the NFL/NBA support the schools programs to recruit and fund these minor league players until the become eligible to draft. Skip all the holy #$%$ The public knows what is going on so just let it happen and stop this stupidity.59493021335

Like him or hate him, Tiger was and still is a presence on the golf course. The man made some bad personal choices and it got splashed across the tabloids. That doesn't diminish the fact that he brought golf center stage. When he hit the scene and did his little juggling act with golf balls and his club, we all copied it. When he bounced the ball then cranked it with his club while it was flying in mid air, we copied it. He was the scariest player in golf because of his raw talent, determination and ability to remain composed. When he gets his act together and returns to golf, he will remind everyone that doubted him just who Tiger Woods is and just why the players feared to compete against him.59493130037

Meet sexy women and rich men.

You bunch of racists need to wake up and realize that we all come from the same element. We share the same sun, breathe in the same air, and live on the same planet. Just because we all have different skin color, features, attributes, etc. doesn't mean we should hate or fear each other for it. You need to take that mindset and throw it out because it's doing you absolutely no good to think that way of your fellow man and neighbor.59493100009

Anyone else noticing a trending pattern that any time someone finds an unknown or a possible cryptozoology animal that the camera shot (for both regular photo and video) is too blurry to make out the details?

Honestly though, this looks like an East Siberian brown bear with food in its mouth (which is probably a fish).
      • Buddog 3 mths ago
Looks like it's a pretty big fish too.

    • jasons  •  Atlanta, Georgia  •  3 mths ago
the first one is a bear carrying a fish by the tail, the second is simply ice chunks caught in river current. these are the lamest "mystery" videos ive seen.
      • David 3 mths ago
I don't know about the second one, but I agree on the first.

You're loosing your mind, man. Clearly a rampaging mammoth. I've already taken the family down to the bomb shelter. This time, ITS REAL.
      • ron 3 mths ago
NO Victor NO! Look, I know its a VERY grainy image but what else could it be but a mamouth or even a Mammut. WOW, I just love all of these grainy images on the seti and sasquatch too. It's obivious that they have super powers to cause images to just go bad. Please don't tell us it's something normal...! lol Yum, Salmon!

With HD cameras on everything you buy its amazing how all these mysterious creatures and ghosts have only been caught on cameras from the civil war.
    • Herb  •  3 mths ago
Someone can get a clear shot of police brutality from 3 blocks away on an Iphone, but every Mammonth, Bigfoot, Yeti and Lochness Monster pic is grainy.
    • Juan Huang Lo  •  Hong Kong, Hong Kong  •  3 mths ago
LOL. Why is it EVERY TIME there is a Big Foot, alien, UFO, Loch Ness etc. sighting the photographer has the worst camera currently on the market BUT if you pee in a dark alley behind a club you get immortalized by 3 different cameras in crystal clear imagery?
    • Leroy O. Jackson  •  3 mths ago
A piece of flotsam? But the current is going the other direction. Your explanation makes even less sense.
    • DreamOn  •  Cheyenne, Wyoming  •  3 mths ago
Please. The first video is a bear with a fish in its mouth; I see it all the time where I live. The second video demonstrates nothing beyond some flotsam flowing down river; until anything other than ice is seen, it's a nothing video. People are too eager to find something where there is nothing.

      It's a bear carrying a salmon.

    • BrentG  •  Pleasanton, California  •  3 mths ago
It's funny how with these videos they are always fuzzy, out of focus and just lousy in quality, especially in this day and age, I could take better footage with my cell phone video.
    • MrPeanut12345  •  Dallas, Texas  •  3 mths ago
Why is it in this day and age where high quality camera and video equipment can be obtained inexpensively at your local Best Buy, that all we still see when people film monsters, space aliens, UFOs, etc., are the same grainy and blurry images? I just bought a nice new Nikon. I'm waiting for a UFO to fly by my house and the aliens knock on my door for a cup of coffee, so I can film them to upload on YouTube. They still haven't showed. They must only visit areas where people only own crappy video gear.
    • Sonni  •  3 mths ago
I don't know what the second video is...like a snake barely above water....but the "Woolly Mammoth"...is a bear carrying away a large fish
    • daniel h  •  Ossining, New York  •  3 mths ago
I have seen enough grizzly and brown bears to see that this is one. it's gate the way it sways it's head to keep fish from flopping( slow and rythmic) thier"s probly a deep pool where the bear is crossing. That's why it's shown only in the middle of the river and not on the sides because of the shallow water
