Writer discovers macabre way some herald the new year

For the past 25 years, millions of commuters have driven past an unusual billboard in Los Angeles that keeps an ongoing count of of people who have died from smoking-related illnesses each year.

The billboard itself reads, "Smoking Deaths This Year," followed by the always upward-ticking count and the ominous words, "And Counting."

But what happens when the annual clock resets to zero? Playwright and screenwriter Gideon Brower wrote in an op-ed in the Los Angeles Times last weekend in which he chronicled his experience watching the smoking billboard reset to zero on New Years Eve. Brower discovered that each year, dozens of people gather underneath the billboard to commemorate its reset. When the clock strikes midnight on New Years the clock resets to zero. But it's only a temporary reprieve as the new smoking death statistics begin to appear on the board.

"They aren't there because it's about smoking, or cancer. They're there because they want to celebrate the New Year with other people, to mark something--the passage of time, the dawn of a New Year--that is happening to all of us whether we like it or not," Brower tells Yahoo News. "For me, the event in general has significance--the idea that people are using a rather grim billboard to form a community, to improvise a way to celebrate New Year's Eve together. There's something ironic and self-aware about it, yet completely sincere at the same time."

The ACS provides minute-by-minute updated statistics but the billboard itself was actually started 25 years ago by local businessman William E. Bloomfield, a former smoker.

"It's a very unique and unconventional way to raise awareness about tobacco use," American Cancer Society (ACS) spokesman Eric Beikmann told Yahoo News in a phone interview. "It's a reminder to the thousands of people who drive by it each day." ACS estimates that 443,000 people will die from smoking related illnesses this year, an average of 1,213 per day, Beikmann said.

The Smoking Deaths billboard has had its own moments in the Hollywood spotlight, most recently showing up in a scene of 2003's The Italian Job.

I'm not advocating smoking, I'm going to try quitting this month. But I have problems with the attitudes of the crusading anti-smokers. Number one, it is an ADDICTION. Most doctors say that the addiction to tobacco smoking is much stronger than a heroin addiction. And while many anti-smokers don't necessarily condone heroin usage, they seem to generally have a kind of sympathy for the "pathetic" heroin addict. The same cannot be said for tobacco addicts. We are looked at as vile, disgusting vermin. Number two, as sad as it is to say, if, by some miracle, EVERY smoker quit today, imagine the consequences. Since the cost of a pack of cigarettes is mostly taxes, your taxes would go through the roof to make up for the huge loss of revenue. The tobacco industry, health industry, and pharm (smoke cessation aids) industry, among others, would take a big hit and add many to unemployment. You think the economy is bad now? Think about it. Just my two cents.

Well, you ARE vile and disgusting. Have you ever smelled a smoker that came in from the "smoking area" outside? They are VILE and DISGUSTING smelling. Their breath reeks. They leave elevators smelling horrendous.

Facts are facts. Smokers are lower-class, less intelligent, less educated, and die earlier than non-smokers. Once you realize that, and put down the poison that you are paying hundreds of dollars a month to ingest (not counting the monumental health care costs you'll face later in life), you life will be better off.

And yes, I'm a reformed smoker. And one that realized the truth before it was too late.

I'll tell you one thing. I am 64 years old and have been INHALING cigarettes for ALMOST 60 years, yeah, 60 fing years. All I ever used to think about was I would probably die from cancer, but let me tell you folks there are just as bad of things related to smoking other than cancer. I have been diagnosed with COPD and it will NEVER improve only get worse. I can barely walk from my living room to my car in the garage without being out of breath and hassling to breathe. I have to take breathing treatments just to be ABLE to sleep, if I don't I cough all night and am unable to take deep breaths. It probably won't be long before I will be needing an oxygen tank just to get around. So if you ever get a chance to talk to a young person about smoking, don't just talk about cancer. Talk to them, not so much about QUANTITY of life, but rather QUALITY of life. Smoking will DESTROY your quality of life if you smoke long enough. I wished I had never seen a cigarette before. Yes, I have tried quitting, but I undoubtedly just don't have the will power, because I an just UNABLE to quit. Please, talk to YOUR youngsters about smoking and how it will, if not kill them, it WILL destroy their QUALITY of life. Thanks for listening to my rant. Have a nice day.

We should have signs like this all over the place, only instead of showing smoking deaths they should show the national debt.
      • GREG 3 mths ago
The more often you see something, the less of a shock it is. I appreciate what you are trying to do (raise awareness of the debt) but I think you'd ultimately make people care less.
      • Richard 3 mths ago
How about a sign with the number of deaths caused by male HOMOSEXUALITY. No, can't do that one. It would some of the killers themselves wouldn't it.
    • DeeJay  •  Surfside, California  •  3 mths ago
should read: number of deaths as a result of people's CHOSEN habit.....everyone in the world knows smoking is hazardous, if you smoke now anyway you weren't "fooled" by the evil tobacco companies. you made a conscious decision.
    • RATSALAD  •  3 mths ago
My dad died from smoking cigarettes. First, he had throat cancer and had to have his voice box removed. 2 years later it was lung cancer. Lung cancer has to be one of the worst ways to die. You breathe less and less until you can't breathe anymore. It isn't easy watching someone you love die like that.

Now they should put up another sign in los angeles - " _____ Number of students sexually molested by our Teachers and counting".
    • Terrible  •  3 mths ago
I started smoking when I was 5 years old,, for real. I quit when I was 31 years old and have not smoked since. When I see the cost of a pack of smokes today !!!, I am glad I quit and never started up again. They do kill,,, BUT,, Govt. taxes at work !!!! With the cost of smokes, it's probably cheaper to smoke pot.

I have worked in Nursing care centers and have seen 100+ year olds still going outside in their wheelchairs to light up. We even have some who are allowed too drink!
There are worse habits, I would rather see a slim, fit person puffing on a cig, then a fat, out of shape person puffing just trying to walk three steps...

My mom smoked herself to death - it was grisly and painful. She had a tumor the size of a bowling ball on her neck. She used to say I'm gonna smoke no matter what - I have to die sometime. That's the attitude that most smokers have. The Smoker's Clock is going to keep counting on.

It is an example of a poor attempt effective reaction. The reaction to statistics in this matter have long been recognized by the government and the tobacco cartel to be totally useless to change behavior. Naturally, beneficiaries of health issues, both financially and academically, are pleased to augment this same type of ignorance of facts. Far too long, campaigns such as ACI do exactly nothing to manage the task of an absolute destructive problem with addiction, and this is continued by the new American Legacy organization. The problem is the stunning idea of posting statistics in big lights is lost on the perception of addicts, those who would be addicts, and pure reasoning. I am quite certain everyone enjoys the notion of doing good by showing signs that change but it would be far better to show at least one sign that there is a change. Since the MSA 12 years ago, abosolutely nothing has changed - except the beneficiaries of tobacco, including the mainstream of health advocacy institutions.

I'm more then likely going to be a number on that board some day. Addiction is a very powerful thing.

The government forbids us to do drugs because it's harmful to us. Unlike cigarettes, which only kill 450K people in the US each year......and remains legal. And don't throw alcohol related deaths into that mix. It's a dichotomy. They selectively choose just exactly what we are allowed to harm ourselves with because they are so much smarter than we us.
