Man’s body goes unfound for four years

CBS58.comThe body of a Wisconsin man was discovered inside his home more than four years after he reportedly killed himself with a handgun.

The "nearly skeletonized body" of David Carter was discovered inside his home in January by a real estate agent sent to deliver foreclosure papers to the house, as first reported by wisn.com. But his actual death is estimated to have occurred sometime in 2007. So, how did Carter's death manage to go unnoticed for so long by friends, family, bill collectors and even the local government?

Like so many things these days, the nation's struggling economy is at least partly to blame. After Carter disappeared, his utilities were eventually shut off and it was presumed his home had been abandoned. But that's only part of the sad story.

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel columnist Jim Stingl dug deeper into the story and discovered that Carter, intentionally or not, had nearly all of his bases covered before apparently choosing to end his own life in utter seclusion.

"This may indeed be the perfect storm that caused the body to go unnoticed," Stingle said in an email interview with the Sideshow. "Still, though, when Carter went totally out of contact with everyone for quite a while, someone should have insisted that police enter the house."

Carter told his friends and neighbors that he was planning to move to New Mexico. When he first disappeared, they apparently assumed he had followed through on those plans. Carter had no siblings and never met his father. The death of his mother in 1997 reportedly put him in a depressive state he never recovered from.

His friends described Carter as a "giving and funny guy." But as with many cases of severe depression, it appears Carter spent enough time in isolation that his disappearance didn't immediately register as alarming.

According to the county medical examiner's report, as quoted by Stingl, "Spider webs were noted all around the residence," and that a "Smith & Wesson 9mm handgun was found lying on the decedent's chest."

Carter's home was paid for, but while local property taxes still accumulated, the city was in no rush to collect. In fact, Stingl notes that the city of West Allis continued to mow his lawn and shovel snow from his driveway in the years after his then unknown passing. The $3,700 in charges for the annual maintenance efforts was simply added to Carter's growing county property tax bills and fees, which had grown to more than $30,000.

Authorities finally moved in after Carter's house was awarded to Milwaukie County in a December tax foreclosure. It is now being put up for sale. Meanwhile, Carter's cousin, Kevin O'Neill, and some of Carter's friends are planning a memorial gathering in his honor.

Suicide was the 10th leading cause of death in 2007, claiming nearly 35,000 lives. Carter's friends says he was depressed in the years leading up to his death and had been drinking more than usual. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, nearly 90 percent of all suicide victims experience issues with substance abuse and/or depression leading up to their deaths.

The idea of peacefully rotting away all alone in one's own home, undiscovered and with no autopsy, funeral, fake mourners etc. is actually very appealing.

My goodness, can't you people READ????? He had no family, no siblings, mother dead, never knew his father. He was typically a loner and TOLD PEOPLE HE KNEW THAT HE WAS MOVING AWAY. So of course no one went looking for him. Sheesh. It was just a perfect storm of circumstances that left the poor man undiscovered, it wasn't a case of uncaring friends and family. Please try to read the article and understand it before posting ridiculous outraged comments. RIP Mr. Carter

I was amazed it took the city so long to go collecting in this time when just about every town in America is in desperate need of more income.

His "friends" are planning a memorial gathering in his honor? Are these the same close pals that didn't have any actual contact at all with him in 4 years?

Have you thought about becoming involved with a church near you? They can offer you fellowship and friendship. If you're not religious, start volunteering; it will help you get out and meet ppl and give you a sense of purpose. :0)

Why are U alone? If you look 67 at 37 why? If you are depressed get help. Call the friends who moved out of state. Do something besides sitting at youre computer. Read the local paper for activities that you can do, a lot are free. If you don't get involved with life, life will not get involved with you.

hey folks, i can relate to mr. carter; i too live alone, i am divorced with no family or friends. many times i considered driving my car off of a cliff (because then they would be sure to find me in a timely manner)...guess what, i went to the ASPCA and adopted a dog who had no home. i liked him so much i adopted another one. now when i come home, they are there to greet me, they wag their tails and jump in my lap! they don't care if i don't dress well and am overweight. they don't care! the wierdest part is that now that i have to walk them i have met some of my neighbors. win-win! i can't believe it. it has changed my life. unconditional love rocks!!!

The lack of reading comprehension of some people astound me. The man said he was moving to another state and didn't tell anyone where in said state. Why would anyone report a man missing if he was telling everyone he was leaving?

Suicide is a RIGHT. No one has any right to pass judgement on a person who commits suicide. and NO ONE especially the government should have ANY right to stop a person from commiting suicide either. it is arrogant and presumptuous for some one to pretend to know what aperson is feeling, and then tell them some cliche trite crap like "it will get better" 'its not permanent"

If a person feels they would be in less pain (physical OR EMOTIONAL) they have every right to die. I am talking suicide on Demand. If there is a right to life; then there is a right to die. I dont believe in some idiotic Flying Spaghetti Monster; we as humans have the right to end our lifes at our chosing.

it is INCREDABLY selfish, for those who want a person to stay alive; to force them to endure the pain and misery that cause them to want to commit suicde. poverty; lonliness; misery...YOU CAN NOT SAY FOR A FACT, that for some, if not MANY individuals those condisitons will be permanent...why then should they continue a miserable existsance, with no guarantee of life improving? Who are we; who is ANYONE to saythey should?

I write this beacsue as a depressed person; i want ot keep my option to kill myself available; and i find it VERY IRRITATING, to hear people have the NERVE to call those who commit suicide selfish; when it is THEY; the family or friends who are selfish, for not letting a suicidal person, end the misery; REGARDLESS of reason. Furthermore the government being abke ti stop suicide by force is a CLEAR violation of the Constitution.

there are MANY reasons for which suicide is a better solution, than continuing to exist in misery; and they arent just terminal conditions. Poverty is an excellent reason (and is usually terminal too, at least in the USA of no one gives a crap about anyone), and so is lonliness.

Too all those who have a problem with this guy killing himself--who died and made you Gods?

"According to the National Institute of Mental Health, nearly 90 percent of all suicide victims experience issues with substance abuse and/or depression leading up to their deaths"

The scary part of this statistic is that 10% of people committed suicide for no apparent reason. They apparently just woke up and figured shooting themselves had to be better than going to work.

"Authorities finally moved in after Carter's house was awarded to Milwaukie County in a December tax foreclosure."

It's called proofreading, Yahoo. Milwaukie is a city in Oregon, not a county (or a city) in Wisconsin.

He should have found himself a lady and made a family of his own. Sad story really though. Rest in peace Carter...
