School suspends cancer survivor teen over hair he plans to donate

AP Photo/The Flint Journal, Lathan Goumas

UPDATE: Here's a link to the change.org petition started by J.T.'s mom.

A Michigan teen who survived a bout with leukemia has been suspended from school over the length of his long hair, which he is planning to donate.

The Detroit News reports that 17-year-old J.T. Gaskins has been growing out his hair since last summer in order to donate it to the Locks of Love charity. Gaskins said he was inspired to make the donation after learning that the sister of a family friend was diagnosed with cancer.

Gaskins was diagnosed with leukemia when he was just a year old and has been in remission since he was seven. "I fought cancer my entire life. I'm going to keep fighting this," Gaskins told the Detroit News. "I'm not going to not give back just because my school says no."

The Madison Academy in Burton says Gaskins' suspension has more to do with the unkempt style of his hair, rather than its length. The school's student handbook requires that boys' hair be, "clean, neat, free of unnatural or distracting colors, off the collar, off the ears and out of the eyes."

Gaskins says Locks of Love requires a 10 inch ponytail for a donation and that his hair is currently only 2 ½ inches long.

Locks of Love Communications Director Lauren Kukkamaa says that while they respect Gaskins' effort, they'd like to see him back in school.

"There are so many ways to support Locks of Love, and we are truly grateful for all of those efforts and this young man and his desire to give back," Kukkamaa said. "But certainly, we understand the school has its reasons for having certain policies in place."

Gaskins is also being encouraged by his mother Christa Plante, who says she supports her son's efforts "100 percent." Plante launched an online petition at Change.org for her son, which has received about 4,700 signatures so far.

"He's seen how it works and how it helped people, how it helped us," she said. "This is for him. He wants to do it now. This feels right," she said.

The petition asks the school to change their policy, allowing students to grow their hair for the Locks of Love charity. The new policy would require a student to sign a promissory note, research the respective cause they wish to support and to keep their hair "well-maintained" until the donation is made.

"I'm fighting for them to make it an option for kids to grow out their hair for Locks of Love, to make it a part of the school and raise awareness for all cancer charities out there that can help patients," Gaskins said. "It wouldn't be a change to where people find a loophole just to grow out their hair."

"I'm fine with all of their rules," Gaskins said. "I just think that with this, they could try to make a compromise."

Locks of Love is a scam, they make families pay for the wigs and sell most of their hair... Pantene Beautiful Lengths on the other hand has been around since only 2006, and has already surpassed Locks of Love in amount of wigs made.

this is a PUBLIC school, not a private one. who said it's not kept right. the kids go to school with their butts hanging out with extra pants, but wait their usually black so nothing is said to them. 2 sets of rules

This is ridiculous! Seriously! he fought an enormous battle which gives him much more insight and most of the time more maturity than other kids his age! The school is very wrong in the way they are handling the situation! My son also beat leukemia and even if he wasn't doing it to donate his hair to locks of love. These kids LOSE ALL THEIR HAIR and have to be mocked and made fun of in public for looking different! Don't believe me? ASK He should absolutely be able to donate his hair, he knows how it feels to go thru that and be bald! He knows what its like to not only be sick but look different than everyone else and be self conscious about it. He knows what its like to wonder if you are going to live. LET HIM GROW HIS HAIR AND DONATE IT SO THAT MAYBE SOME OTHER KID DOESN'T GO THRU THE HUMILIATION OF BEING STARED AT! Where is the petition?? I am going to sign it right now!!

If he kept his hair CLEAN AND OUT OF HIS FACE HE WOULD BE ABLE TO HAVE IT HOWEVER LONG HE WANTED!
        Way to be a sheep!
      • Amy 3 mths ago
His hair style shouldn't matter. Honestly his hairstyle is trendy and the reason it looks "greasy" I am willing to bet you is because it has styling product in it. Most kids that go thru chemo are actually cleaner because their immune systems usually stay weaker than the average person and they bathe regularly to stay as germ free as possible.

If he would like to grow his hair, let him. Defining a student by the neatness and tidiness of his hair is a bit controlling. The school is suggesting that a certain hairstyle can alter the social status of a student among his peers if it is longer or different. If that is the case, the school is on a power trip. The boy wants to grow his hair long, big deal. He is old enough to make his own decisions when it comes to his appearance. He's also doing it for all the right reasons. If the school and society judges people and their status according to their fashion, what does that honestly say about us as a whole? Seriously.

I think if a boy wants long hair, then who cares. Howabout they compromise...let him have the hair, but it must be pulled out of his face and neat. Maybe it would inspire others to do the same. Sometimes what is "right" doesn't fit into the rule book, but authority figures need to realize that they are not dictators and it is a good thing when young people make decisions, especially this kind of decision. Young people are the future.
      • Joshua 3 mths ago
I'm not sure if you read the entire article. The school said it had more to do with the unkempt style of it than the length. The compromise you suggest is essentially what the school has said is already an option.
      • XxMiSs.StaCixX 3 mths ago
yes I read the article. Im not necessarily only referring to the suspension. i mean the rule in general. Its actually a stupid rule. There is no set in stone "rule" that says the male gender should have short hair. Rather than the school suspending him, they should have handed him a rubber-band and said-if you put it up, we will not take further action.

One has to have a degree to be an educator. This incident proves with a fair amount of certainty that possessing a degree is not an indication of intelligence or common sense.
      • skyknight2003 3 mths ago
Its not really stupidity, but bullheadishness and refusing to move an inch from a certain stance. While they may have a perfectly reasonable demand, looking at this guys history should prove he isn't just using this as an excuse to have long hair.

A degree short of at least a Masters is just a piece of paper saying you can follow simple instructions.

Also, I love that people will jump to the support of a kid who wants to go to the junior prom with her girlfriend, which is against school rules, then say to this kid "the school has rules, get over it". Either you want to let kids "stand for a cause" or you don't. There shouldn't be double-standards on who gets to stand up against something they don't agree with. He is handling it in a mature, effective way. They are trying to get something in place that says people can grow out their hair IF they sign something saying they are donating it AFTER researching the cause they'd like to donate it to. It doesn't get much more "fair" than that. I hope he manages to get that put into place.

When I was growing up, my father was one of the most straight-laced and strict people I knew. Twenty years later, when my mother told me he was growing his hair out for Locks of Love, I couldn't believe it until I saw it. The old man has softened considerably since I was a kid, and the proof was in the good natured responses his four children got by way of reply after ribbing him for being a "hippie" 30 years too late. Folks, this is a charity worth supporting.

Rules in High School are out of control atm, but so are the kids themselves. These rules they put down, be it mandatory uniforms or hair-length, are their perception of how to fix the problem of 'unruly' kids. But the root issue isn't that kids are 'bad' but that their families don't have the time they need to teach their kids right from wrong, to discipline them when they cross that line. Today, in most families both the man and woman of the home must work to make it, that leaves kids with who to teach them? This is just a small piece of a larger puzzle, one you could see if only you could step-back and look at the entirety of everything happening.
      • soulflower2 3 mths ago
Yes. So much is wrong. People do need time to raise kids. The time I spent outside of the US showed me that companies don't really need to have people working 90 hours a week. Downtime can be possible. YOu can even be a 24 hour corporation and let people work decent hours, but it requires management, stockholders, and board members with an understanding of family life. For some professionals, both parents can work part-time or one can stay home, but this is honestly not possible for every human on this Earth.

no wonder our kids are so messed up...where are the prorities in our educational system?

This school is just one of many that have rules in place telling a student how they should look. It's hard enough having the peer pressure of those around you trying to make you something you aren't, the school shouldn't be adding to that. I support his efforts and hope he achieves his goal.

It is simple! "The school's student handbook requires that boys' hair be, "clean, neat, free of unnatural or distracting colors, off the collar, off the ears and out of the eyes." It doesn't say a thing about having it any special length. Keep it clean, pull it back into a pony tail while in school, cut a mall amount for bangs if you feel that you need to; but you will follow the guideline and still do a good deed-the legal way! Your deed is good, reasoing awesome, but show them that you have the brains to out smart them.

my daughter is also a cancer survivor. When she was 19 she had a 20 lb. ovarian tumor removed. She has donated her hair twice since then. In the town we live in one of our county officials donates HIS hair every year during our Relay for Life because one of his daughters is a cancer survivor. In my opinion the principle should grow his and donate it in support of this young man.

Oh please! He should leave that school immediately. Any institution that cares about looks more than intentions should be shut down.

What is this? Does the school really believe that monotoring the length of a student's hair they are maintaining law and order? At at age when youth is more open-minded than they will ever be again, and the school has an opportunity to connect and teach something of value to carry these kids through life's bumps, the school board suspends this boy for not obeying their orders. Now here's the rub: This boy IS thinking, and he is thinking about someone other than himself and anyone who has raised kids knows that in itself, is an accomplishment. So we have a school board punishing him for being an original person, a thinker, a unique one who decides he wants to give back to others in need. He has found a beautiful, inexpensive way (kids are always short on money) to help others and for this he gets his wings clipped. I think it would be great if the entire student body or as many as are moved to contribute, be allowed to grow their hair long so they too can donate to cancer patients who have lost their hair. They would be following this boy's example. Good for him! I'm all in!
