Romney nosediving in South Carolina as Gingrich surges

Just yesterday, the political prediction markets gave Mitt Romney an 85 percent chance of winning Saturday's primary in South Carolina. With this morning's news that Rick Perry is dropping out and endorsing Newt Gingrich, Gingrich appears to be consolidating the anyone-but-Romney vote. (This in spite of the fact that Santorum is now the officially winner in Iowa by 34 votes as of today, and has the backing of evangelical Christian leaders.)

At present writing, South Carolina's primary is now a dogfight between Romney at about 60 percent and Gingrich at 40 percent, according to prediction market data. Just three days ago, prior to Monday's Fox debate, Gingrich was below 10%, just above Santorum:

Romney's position has been comfortable so long as Gingrich, Santorum, and Perry have split the non-Romney vote. (More about how Paul fits in momentarily.) His hope was that there would be no consolidation prior to South Carolina, where he will only win with a plurality, if at all.

Perry had no likelihood of winning the South Carolina primary, but he did retain a few percentage points of support that will likely consolidate to Gingrich. Santorum, meanwhile, received no boost from the revised Iowa results that put him 34 votes ahead of Romney. In the past the electorate has tended to obsess over the placement of the candidates, regardless of the proportional nature of the delegates. This belated Iowa result may break the mold.

Ron Paul, meanwhile, is really running in parallel to all of this Romney versus anyone-but-Romney drama. His supporters are coming from a different, libertarian and independent wing of the Republican primary electorate who don't appear to readily switch camps.

Even with a win Saturday, there are still major concerns about Gingrich's long-term viability. At the same time that Gingrich is consolidating his South Carolina support, one of his ex-wives is going to be on the air tonight on ABC with a scathing interview about his lack of personal morals. There are also serious electability concerns with Gingrich; our models show him about 10 percentage points less likely to win against Barack Obama than Romney.

After South Carolina, there will functionally be three candidates remaining. Romney and Paul are going to continue regardless of what happens. Gingrich is going to be fine as long as he "places" (i.e., finishes first or second), but will be dead in the water if Paul or Santorum slips him by. Santorum could continue if he "shows" (i.e., finishes first, second, or third), but that is both unlikely and not very viable if Gingrich is ahead of him, given Paul's support. Here are our latest likelihoods on win, place, and show for the four remaining candidates:

This is why people shouldn't vote based on poll numbers. Besides, no one is going to give you a prize if you vote for the person who happens to win.

It's not even a poll, I think. He seems to be doing analysis strictly on these new online political betting systems.

        Very true.

Don't you love how they tell you who has no chance of winning and who is most likely to win before anyone has ever voted.
      • Wyatt Earp 4 mths ago
Sort of like they already know who will, that's scary, really.

Houdini, its like Santorum forcing his dogma and hate once in office. "Seig Santorum!"

"In the past the electorate has tended to obsess over the placement of the candidates"

This IS true of the press. I believe it of the electorate indirectly; only to the extent we take cues from the media.

I thought only Santorum could surge from behind

First off, unless the GOP wakes up quickly, the CANNOT BEAT OBAMA! Paul will run 3rd party, as he should, and split the vote! Why, because we Paul voters are voting for the Constitution and Bill of Rights, not necessarily Paul! You can never sway us to vote for another Wall Street owned candidate!

So the choice is very simple - either get your support behind Paul - and oh by the way - Paul is running equal to Obama in national polls, and that's with NO media support and a complete suppression campaign by all major media! With a little support, Paul will win in a landslide and the American People will have a real, American Patriot in the White House, first time in decades!

Why third party ? Be patient . Say Yes to Dr. No !
      • Matthew 4 mths ago
        you are so correct
      • David 4 mths ago
Vegas Yoda - you are correct - he can pull of the win in the GOP! But a backup plan is 3rd party - Paul has 2 chances to win the election!

Rich man paying low taxes is not the one to win the hearts and minds of the American people.

      • mike 4 mths ago
He lives off his investments, and pays 15% capital gains tax. he also gives another
10% to his church every year, so he's really paying 25%. No crime here.

Anyone else catch CNN attempting to skip Ron Paul during the other three candidates being allowed to debate abortion in this country? It was blatant and took the crowd voicing their displeasure to allow Paul to speak. He was shafted most of the night while ameteur hour was taking place next to him with the day's biggest #$%$ contest. Though, when given the opportunity once again Paul makes complete sense and brought up issues such as the economy numerous times which those running the debate and the other candidates fail to speak of... and Newt is a bit itchy- I'm not quite sure he is whom I would want with his finger on the button and the other two are blatant hipocrites who flop more than a fish on the beach. Arrogance describes them to a T!! It is so obvious who the other three are pandering to as well as the network. It is starting to upset people, especially those attending the debates. It's ridiculous and something needs to be done. Between horrible voter counts in Iowa to the media and Washington speaking for the people instead of letting us citizens decide- I have about had enough and you folks should be pretty sick of these actions too!! We are being taken for idiots all while money and power does all the talking. Where were the other candidates the other day voicing anger and fighting the internet piracy debacle? Ron Paul was in Washington expressing his displeasure and fighting for our freedom. People please wake up. I know he is older and a bit jittery but the man has what is best for our nation right now down pat. Currently the economy is our enemy these days and nobody comprehends more about that aspect of our monetary system then Paul. Don't even get me started on the Keystone Pipeline-- Ron Paul 2012!!!

And who's telling us this? The media, who are owned by the higher ups.

Don't let the media choose your president.

Not to worry. Romney's the most popular candidate in the Cayman Islands.

What is wrong with us that we would even consider having this man be president of our country. He can say it all he wants but he is not a moral man, he was faithless to his wives, he was in a scandal and mis used his Tax Exempt Status, he proved to be dishonest. What would ever make one think he would be the person to run our country.

I didn't fall off the turnip truck yesterday and I have seen my share of Presidential elections. But I have never seen so many weak Republican candidates ever. Obama couldn't have done a better job if he had hand selected them. .............wait a minute !

Vote Newt, Mitt or Rick for more Slave Child Labor, only they are running out of places for FREE TRADE agreements, so it might be here? Ron Paul has defended American jobs.

Does anybody else find Romney to be a spoiled, rich, better than everybody elser?
    • Craig  •  Phoenix, Arizona  •  4 mths ago
It is hilarious that the Republican establishment claims that Mitt can beat Obama when 60% of Republicans can't stand the guy. But he is going to attract independents? LOL.

It doesn't matter who wins in 2012, Repubs and Dems are both owned by the banksters. They own the media, the whole dam world! Look up the Rothschilds and Usery. It explains how our "paper money" system was destined to fail from the beginning, and how the national debt can NEVER be paid off.

Stock up on guns and ammo (Christmas had the biggest gun sale in HISTORY), stock up on food supplies cause your going to be growing your own food. All the government dependents will come looking for what you have, and you better be ready to stand your ground once this turd gets flushed!!!
