Herman Cain claims God directed him to run for president

Herman Cain this weekend explained he was dubious about the best direction to take in challenging President Obama, but that, once he elected to pray on the question, God convinced him a candidacy was in his future.

The former Godfather's Pizza CEO said the following to a crowd at a Young Republican National Federation event in Georgia Saturday:

I prayed and prayed and prayed-- I'm a man of faith, I had to do a lot of praying for this one, more praying than I'd ever done before in my life. When I finally realized that it was God saying that this is what I needed to do, I was like Moses: 'You've got the wrong man, Lord. Are you sure?' Now, you're not supposed to doubt God, but I'm going, 'I think maybe you're looking at somebody else'... but I did not look back.

Still, according to some of the other GOP candidates--and their families--Cain isn't the only 2012 hopeful whom God wants in the race.

Anita Perry, wife of Texas Gov. Rick Perry, said last month that her husband's competitors "may feel like God called them too. But I truly feel like we are here for that purpose." She said her husband was the only true conservative in the race.

And Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann said this summer that God gave her a "sense" that she should run for president.
