9-year-old boy, 45-year-old woman critically injured in crash in Fort Pierce

FORT PIERCE — A 9-year-old boy and a 45-year-old woman were critically injured following a Wednesday night crash that also landed a man in jail, a police spokesperson said Thursday.

Fort Pierce Police at 8:06 p.m. Wednesday went to Orange Avenue and North 29th Street, police spokesperson Larry Croom said.

Investigators determined a 2005 Chevrolet Equinox driven by the 45-year-old woman was westbound on Orange Avenue when a 2014 Dodge Charger struck it in a T-bone manner. The 9-year-old was a passenger in the Chevrolet.

The Dodge was northbound on South 29th Street at the time of the crash. South 29th Street becomes North 29th Street north of Orange Avenue.

Croom said there is a stop sign on South 29th Street.

A short time later, a 28-year-old man returned to the scene. Police said he’d been driving the Dodge at the time. He was arrested on a charge of failing to stop and remain at a crash involving serious bodily injury.

The 45-year-old woman and 9-year-old boy were critically injured and taken to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce, Croom said. The woman was listed in stable condition, Croom said Thursday.

The boy later was flown to St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach, where he was listed as stable with non-life threatening injuries, Croom said.

Four other parked vehicles apparently were involved in the crash.

Those with information about the crash or witnessed it are asked to contact Officer Nicholas Anton at 772-979-1482 or nanton@fppd.org.

Information also can be supplied via Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers at 800-273-TIPS.
