ALLENDALE — The Vale, a 70-unit apartment complex at 220 W. Crescent Ave., officially opened Thursday.

The Hampshire Companies, Mayor Amy Wilczynski and borough officials were present for the ceremonial ribbon-cutting at the complex, built on property formerly occupied by Black Millwork.

Made up mostly of one- and two-bedroom rental units, the four-story building also includes six affordable units and three reserved for first responders.

"This was a long time coming, with many turns and challenges along the way, including COVID," Wilczynski said. "The borough is very fortunate to be partnering with a company like Hampshire. They are a company with integrity and stood by us all these years and produced a great complex for Allendale.”

The building includes a clubroom and lounge, a fitness center and a 9,460-square-foot outdoor courtyard.

The borough initially bought the Black Millwork and adjacent Andersen Windows properties for $14 million in 2017. The plan at the time was to use the 12.2-acre site for a new borough hall and affordable housing.

The borough shifted gears during COVID, changing its emphasis to revamping space at Borough Hall, at 500 W. Crescent Ave., and using the Millwork site for a community center, since the borough had no public indoor recreation space.

The property was sold to The Hampshire Companies in 2021. The Andersen Windows building was converted for storage, with The Vale and community center on the Black Millwork part of the site.

Construction has just begun on the community center, scheduled to open in the fall.

“By recognizing the untapped potential within these properties, we have created a hub for thriving businesses within Allendale while also establishing a place that residents can be proud to call home,” said James E. Hanson, president & CEO of The Hampshire Companies.
