Apartment damaged, fire marshal called in Rockwood fire

ROCKWOOD ― One apartment was heavily damaged and the state police fire marshal called Sunday to investigate an early morning structure fire in the borough.

Rockwood Fire Chief Chad Lytle said the fire was "blowing out the second story window" at 400 Broadway St., Rockwood, when fire departments arrived for the 4:58 a.m. call.

"The occupants were already evacuated," he said.

It was an apartment building, with eight apartments, he said, but he didn't know who owned the building. Lytle said only two of the apartments were occupied. One apartment was heavily damaged. Three were water-damaged and the other four were OK, he said.

Rockwood, New Centerville, Meyersdale, Garrett and Somerset fire departments responded to the call, along with Somerset EMS.

"We knocked the fire down and did mop up and were clear from the scene about two hours after the dispatch," Lytle said.

The state police fire marshal was called to investigate. He said what started the fire has not yet been determined.

"The slippery roads, snow and cold did not factor into battling the fire by freezing the flow of water," Lytle said. "I'd like to thank our neighboring departments, New Centerville, Somerset, Garrett and Meyersdale for their assistance. We all did a great job working together to get the fire knocked down."
