The overall number of folks moving into the Buckeye State fell last year.

At least the number of those moving to Ohio using U-Haul for the move.

The company tracks its fleet 192,200 trucks and 138,500 trailers and even box containers to compile its an annual listing of where folks of moving to determine growth states.

And for 2023 Ohio ended up at No. 23 − sliding 14 spots from the previous year − on U-Haul's Growth Index that took a look at one-way customer moves.

Overall in Ohio those moving into the state fell some 3 percent from 2023 while those moving out of the state fell 2 percent.

Those arriving in the state accounted for more than 50 percent of all one-way U-Haul traffic in and out of Ohio making it an overall net-gain state in the eyes of the company.

What were the 'hot' cities in Ohio in 2023 for moves?

There were some communities in Ohio that saw more people use U-Haul to move in rather than move out.

The company says those cities in Ohio that saw more people move in rather than move out include Miamisburg, West Chester, Delaware, Hamilton, Cuyahoga Falls, Trotwood, Huber Heights, Springfield, Elyria, Lancaster, Mansfield, Canton-North Canton and Cleveland Heights.

Cities that were considered so-called break-even markets where the number of folks using U-Haul to move in and out include Cleveland, Middletown and Newark.

Migration trends in the U.S.

U-Haul looked at some 2.5 million one-way customer transactions to map out which states experienced growth in 2023.

States included Texas, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee made the company's list of the Top 5 growth states.

For the fourth straight year, California ranked last with the largest number of rentals for net moves out of the state.
