Numerous commemorative events and community service initiatives are scheduled throughout metro Detroit on Monday, Jan. 15, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The King Holiday and Service Act was signed in 1994 making it the only federal holiday designated by Congress as a National Day of Service, encouraging Americans to volunteer time to contribute to their communities.
