Restaurant-goers on Binghamton's South Side will have the chance to visit a new gastropub at the site of the former South City Publick House in the coming weeks.

The ownership and management of The Pour House Pub and Grill in Johnson City will be opening South City Pub & Grill, with a projected opening date of early February.

How did South City Pub & Grill come to be?

In a Jan. 1 Facebook post, owners Suzanne and John Clark announced the "bittersweet decision" to close South City Publick House after eight years in business — prior to that, they also ran the former South Side Yanni's restaurant at the site for two years.

"The future is bright for us as we plan to focus on our health, family, and well-being," they said.

According to co-owner Matthew Smith, the owners of South City Publick House reached out to the group after hearing good things about The Pour House.

Smith said he hopes loyal customers of South City Publick House will enjoy the restaurant's new take, which Smith said will be family and community-oriented.

"Our good wishes for success go out to the restaurateurs we are handing the South City baton to," the Clarks said in the Facebook post, "who have their own vision for this great local joint."

What's changing, staying the same at South City restaurant

Smith said outside of minor paint and maintenance work, the interior of the restaurant will remain the same, and that the group loved the brick and wood-focused style that the Publick House offered. Smith said that the bulk of the changes centered around the kitchen, which was remodeled to fit the culinary aspirations of the new ownership.

According to Smith, the options at South City Pub & Grill will be similar to what is offered at The Pour House, which follows a gastropub style consisting of elevated bar food. Smith said the restaurant will focus on homemade meals made from scratch with fresh, locally sourced ingredients from local butchers and bakeries.

Smith said he and his co-owners wanted to continue the example set by the Publick House, and that they hope to provide residents of the area with a fantastic dining experience.

"It has been a great establishment on the South Side of Binghamton for many years, and we want to continue with great service, fresh ingredients and homemade food in a family-friendly environment," said Smith. "The recipe for success in this business is great food and great service at a reasonable price."
