EVANSVILLE — Dr. Richard Moss, a Jasper, Indiana-based ear, nose and throat surgeon, announced Wednesday he will seek the 8th District congressional seat this year now that Rep. Larry Bucshon is retiring.

And not for the first time.

Moss, a self-styled staunch conservative, challenged Bucshon in the 2016 and 2018 Republican primary elections to choose nominees for the 8th District seat. But Bucshon won by margins of 65-35% in 2016 and 63-25% in 2018. That year, Tokyo, Japan, resident Rachel Covington garnered the remaining 12% of the GOP primary vote. The 25-year-old former Evansville resident was at the time teaching English to Japanese students in Tokyo.

More: Bucshon built a very specific profile in Congress. He says he won't seek re-election.

With Bucshon now out of the 2024 race, Moss sees an opportunity.

"Richard Moss has already built a strong foundation of grassroots support who want to send a proven conservative fighter to Washington," said a statement issued by Moss's campaign. "His campaign will focus on combatting immigration, improving our failing economy, and getting big government off the backs of hardworking Americans."

The filing period for congressional candidates in Indiana ends Feb. 9.
