Coronavirus: Global death toll surpasses 300,000

Here’s a recap of the global response to the coronavirus pandemic for Friday, May 15, 2020.

Over 4.5 million people worldwide have tested positive for the coronavirus, according to data from Johns Hopkins University, and more than 305,000 people have died. In the United States, there have been over 1.4 million confirmed cases and more than 86,000 deaths.

The Democratic U.S. House passed a $3 trillion stimulus, mostly along party lines. It is expected to face opposition in the Republican-controlled Senate. Nearly 3 million Americans filed for unemployment benefits last week, according to data released Thursday. More than 36 million have filed since mid-March.
