Dallas County GOP moves caucus sites out of Perry High School following deadly shooting

Dallas County Republicans announced Monday they will move caucus sites out of Perry High School, which was the site of a deadly school shooting last week.

Five precincts that had been scheduled to caucus for president there will instead meet at the Perry Elementary School at 1600 Eighth Street in Perry. They are:

  • Perry 1

  • Perry 2

  • Perry 3

  • Spring Valley/Dallas (SVD)

  • Lincoln/Washington/Linn (LWL)

Iowa's caucuses will begin at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15. Party officials are urging Perry's caucus participants to arrive early because of the change. Doors to Perry's caucuses will open at 6 p.m.

Ahmir Jolliff, a sixth-grader, was shot and killed when a 17-year-old student at Perry High School opened fire in the school. Jolliff, who attended the middle school that's connected to the high school, was shot three times, authorities said. Funeral services have been scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Thursday.

Seven others, including the high school's principal, were injured before the shooter died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

How to find your caucus location

There's a two-part system for finding where you need to be at 7 p.m. caucus night:

Your caucus site's location will be listed under your county and your precinct. For example, a person who lives in the 035 DES MOINES 35 precinct will click on Polk County, scroll to the precinct entry and learn that they will caucus at the Roosevelt High School lunchroom.

Caucus sites are subject to change, so be sure to check the website before you head out to caucus.
