Department of Justice identifies man killed and police officer involved in Feb. 23 Green Bay shooting

GREEN BAY – The Wisconsin Department of Justice has identified the police officer and the man involved in a fatal exchange of gunfire in February.

Green Bay police officer Dan Skenandore, who has 6½ years of experience, shot at Steve Evaristo Ventura, 40, on the afternoon of Feb. 23.

Skenanadore was placed on administrative leave following the shooting, per department policy. An investigation by the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation is ongoing.

Around 1 p.m. Feb. 23, the Green Bay Police Department received a report of a "disturbance" between two vehicles involving a weapon, Police Chief Chris Davis said at the time.

Skenandore located one of the vehicle believed to be involved on Green Ridge Drive near the 3100 block of Open Gate Trail. Ventura fired his weapon, and Skenandore and Ventura "exchanged gunfire," according to DCI.

Ventura was injured. First responders attempted lifesaving measures and transported Ventura to a hospital, but he later died.

The "cause of the injuries sustained by Ventura" remains under investigation, according to DCI.

No law enforcement officers were injured in the incident. Officers recovered a gun from the scene.

Skenandore was wearing his body camera at the time of the shooting, and police vehicles on scene also had squad cameras, according to DCI.

Assisting DCI in the investigation is the Wisconsin State Crime Laboratory, Wisconsin State Patrol, the Brown County Sheriff's Office and the Brown County Medical Examiner's Office.
