Elderly man dies after he and wife are hit by vehicle

An elderly man hit by a vehicle on Thursday night died at a local hospital on Friday afternoon, according to Ocala Police Department officials.

Here's what we know about the crash:

Where did it happen? At the intersection of North Magnolia Avenue and State Road 40.

Who's the deceased? He was identified as Charles Ungermann, 89, of upstate New York.

Was the victim alone? No. He was with his wife, Geraldine Ungermann, 83.

Is the woman injured, and if so what's her condition? Authorities said she and her husband were taken to HCA Florida Ocala Hospital. She was listed in serious condition. Her husband died at the hospital, police officials said.

About the crash: Witnesses told officers a newer model Nissan Sentra driven by a 21-year-old woman from The Villages was traveling westbound on SR 40. The couple was on North Magnolia Avenue, attempting to cross SR 40 from north to south against a crosswalk signal. Officials said the Nissan struck the man and woman. It doesn't appear speed was a factor, according to the witnesses.

What's the speed limit on the roadway? 30 mph. Police officials said the investigation is ongoing and so far no arrest has been made.

Crash death: Traffic death: Man crashed his car and started walking on CR 315. A pickup truck hit him.

Other deaths: The death was the second for the year within the city limits of Ocala. In 2023, city cops recorded nine traffic deaths.
