GENOA TWP. — A quirky race at Mount Brighton was once again an annual tradition for families.

Contestants in the skiing and snowboarding venue's "Duct Tape Derby" were challenged Saturday, Jan. 20, with fashioning sleds using only reused cardboard, duct tape and paint. The race returned to Mount Brighton last year.

Charlie Stein and his family walked away winners for the second time in a row.

Stein and his wife Erica's two children, June, 8, and Joey, 6, who live in Bloomfield Township, manned their "Yeti Sledy," a cardboard and duct tape contraption decorated with a blue yeti face and "BRRR...."

Stein said his wife discovered the event on social media last year and decided to make it a family project. The kids helped with the sled, mostly engineered by Erica, who has a background in graphic arts. After they won last year, the sled stayed in a corner of their basement.

This year, they pulled it out, gave it a new bottom, and added more tape.

Participants competed in multiple races, and winners advanced to the next round. More than 20 teams participated this year.

"They have kind of a course built, really a hill with some snow banks on the side and a ramp at the end that slows them down with nets and pads," Stein said. "You push them up to a certain line and let them go. It's a lot like the old soap box derbies."

He said teams got creative with their sleds. Prizes included Mount Brighton swag, including ski googles.
