FBI takes lead on investigation into explosive device found in Deming, Albuquerque

The FBI is investigating the explosive device discovered in Deming on Monday.

According to Deming Police, officers responded to reports of a possible explosion at the Adult Probation Office. Officers found a suspicious object near the entrance to the building. The NMSP bomb squad was called to the scene to investigate and according to surveillance footage from a nearby building, a vehicle description of a possible suspect was identified.

At approximately noon on Monday, officers located a car suspected of involvement in the incident and a pursuit ensued. It ended on Interstate 10 westbound near Exit 82.

According to the Deming Police Department, the driver was taken into custody by New Mexico State Police. Neither the name of that person nor if any charges against them were filed was made public as of Jan. 23.

Situation resolved: Explosive device found in Deming, suspicious package cleared in Las Cruces

There were also reports of suspicious packages reported in Las Cruces. Law enforcement gave the all clear in Las Cruces when the suspicious item reported on Picacho Ave. turned out to be just a box.

An FBI spokesman told the Sun-News Monday night that the FBI is also investigating a suspected explosive device sent to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Albuquerque on Monday.

State Police told the Sun-News the FBI was the lead agency for the ongoing investigation.
