Johnson County schools announce third cancelation of week as second winter storm looms

A week jam-packed with more than a foot of snow is forecasted to get even snowier and much colder, prompting Johnson County schools to cancel classes for a third time this week.

Widespread accumulation and hazardous conditions impacted travel across eastern Iowa early in the week, with 15 inches of snow reported in the Iowa City area.

After returning to school on Thursday, students are set for a long weekend. A second set of winter storms and frigid temperatures have prompted the National Weather Service to issue a winter storm warning, a wind chill warning and most recently, a blizzard warning through Saturday.

The latest NWS Quad Cities forecast projects the Iowa City area could see snowfall totals between eight and 12 inches from the latest spell of winter weather.

Here is who has canceled school lFriday, Jan. 12:

The Iowa City Community School District has canceled all classes on Friday, Jan. 12. All buildings and district offices will be closed and all activities scheduled for Friday have been canceled. Students will now have a four-day weekend, as the district had previously scheduled Monday as a day off in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The school board was forced to postpone its Jan. 9 meeting until next Tuesday, Jan. 16, because of the weather.

The Solon Community School District was the first to cancel classes on Friday, Jan. 12. Students were also out of the classroom on Tuesday and Wednesday. They will not return to classes until Tuesday, Jan. 16. Teachers had previously scheduled a "professional development day" on Monday.

Classes in the Clear Creek Amana School District were canceled on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. The district has not announced its plans for Friday as of 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Students at Iowa City Regina were out of the classroom on Tuesday and Wednesday, but the school has not made any official announcement regarding class on Friday as of late Thursday afternoon.

Lone Tree Community School District also canceled on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. The district has not made any official decision regarding classes on Friday as of 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
