Covington police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 25-year-old woman, who was killed Saturday afternoon.

A 38-year-old man has been arrested and charged with murder in the death of Kierra Lane, the mother of the man's two children, police reported Monday.

Kierra Lane, 25, was found fatally shot in a shooting in Covington's Latonia neighborhood Saturday afternoon, police said. Lane was shot multiple times and died at the scene.

Police announced Sunday they were searching for her children's father in connection with the death.

Mario Duran Payne was arrested Monday in Louisville, Kentucky. He faces murder and weapons charges and will be brought back to Kenton County for trial.

Witnesses told police that Lane was exchanging custody of her children with Payne at another location, according to a criminal complaint. However, Payne followed her back to the West 34th Street home to pick up clothes so the children to spend the night at his home.

The pair were arguing on the porch when Payne retrieved a handgun from his vehicle, a witness told police, adding Lane tried to retreat inside and shut the door when Payne opened fire.

She collapsed just inside the front door. Investigators say Payne fled the scene without his children.

Payne has prior felony convictions for drug trafficking and possession and he's not legally allowed to own a firearm.

Covington police are still investigating the killing. Investigators are asking anyone with information to contact Cincinnati/NKY Crime Stoppers at 513-352-3040.
