Marion PD to step up enforcement in Mt. Vernon Avenue waterline project area

Construction of Phase 2 of the waterline installation along Mt. Vernon Avenue in Marion will begin Monday. The phase will extend from Bradford Street to Forest Street. Traffic control measures are in place.

Because of violators of the current traffic control, the Marion Police Department will have officers on site periodically during construction in order to keep the crews and the traveling public safe, according to a news release. If violations continue, measures may be taken to modify traffic control by strategically closing certain side streets.

Aqua is in the midst of a $3.16 million project to replace more than a mile of watermain along Mount Vernon Avenue.

To minimize traffic impacts Aqua has broken the project into four phases.

Phase 2 of the project includes replacing the watermain between Bradford Street to Forest Street, connecting 18 customers to the main and installing four fire hydrants and nine new valves. The phase will take eight weeks to complete, weather permitting.

During this portion of the project, westbound traffic will be maintained but lane closures and parking restrictions will be necessary in construction areas. Eastbound traffic will be detoured down East Church Street to Sargent Street to East Center Street to U.S. Route 23.

Lawn restorations will be completed in the fall.

Water service will be maintained throughout construction. However, customers receiving new service lines will experience short-term interruptions while their services are connected to the new main near the end of the project. Those customers will be notified by Aqua in advance of the planned interruptions.

Also, Holmes Place between Garden and Orchard Streets will be closed from 7 a.m. Monday through 6 p.m. Friday while Marion wastewater treatment plant crews work on a sewer issue.
