Mercury Racing will return to Sheboygan in 2024. Here's what to know.

SHEBOYGAN — Powerboat racing will return to Sheboygan’s shore this summer, after bringing in $4.7 million in visitor spending last year.

The city has been selected as a site for the Mercury Racing Midwest Challenge for a second year, in partnership with Fond du Lac-based marine and automotive parts manufacturer Mercury Racing and Powerboat P1.

This time, the competition will be open to all offshore classes, according to a news release.

“I am thrilled to welcome back this exhilarating event to the 'Malibu of the Midwest,'” Mayor Ryan Sorenson said in a news release. "It not only showcases our city’s stunning waterfront but also brings together the community in celebration of speed, skill and the thrill of competition. This sense of excitement and unity contributes to the vibrancy of Sheboygan.”

The powerboat racing will take place Aug. 9-11 this year. The competition in Sheboygan is one of several locations announced in the P1 Offshore and Class 1 race calendar, along with Sarasota and St. Petersburg in Florida.

The three-day event debuted in August 2023, drawing about 43,000 visitors and more than 40 racing teams to the area. There was a block party, meet-and-greet with race winners and brat fries in the city.

“This event not only brings a surge of energy to our city but also underscores our commitment to hosting world-class events,” City Administrator Casey Bradley said in a news release. “We appreciate the partnership with Powerboat P1 and Mercury Racing, and we eagerly anticipate the positive impact the race event will have on our local economy and community spirit.”

At this time, the Mercury event will just return for 2024. Sorenson said the city hasn't signed a three-year contract, which was rumored over the summer.
