Former President Donald Trump won Michigan's Republican primary, defeating former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley in another 2024 contest.

Trump's victory came after Haley's embarrassing loss over the weekend in her home state of South Carolina. The former United Nations ambassador has vowed to continue seeking the Republican presidential nomination – and competing with Trump.

President Joe Biden also won the Michigan Democratic primary, a victory that was long expected even as area activists tried to launch a protest campaign against him.

Donald Trump celebrates win in phone call to Michigan Republicans

Minutes after winning Michigan's Republican primary, Donald Trump phoned in to a Michigan Republican watch party to celebrate.

"I'm so proud of the results because they're far greater than anticipated," Trump told the crowd in Grand Rapids. Looking ahead to a likely general election against Biden, Trump said: “We win Michigan, we win the whole thing.”

Trump and his aides are likely to use the Michigan results to put more pressure on Haley to exit the race, but don't bet on that happening anytime soon.

As the results from Michigan rolled in, supporters of Haley pointed out that at least 25%-to-30% of Republican primary voters continue to oppose Trump, and could go elsewhere in the general election. The former South Carolina vowed to stay in until next week's Super Tuesday set of more than a dozen primaries, seeking to make the case against Trump.

Nikki Haley's campaign calls Donald Trump's margin of victory a "warning sign" for GOP

Nikki Haley may have lost to Donald Trump on Tuesday night, but her campaign sought to portray the former president's less-than-40% margin of victory as a “flashing warning sign” for Republicans in the general election.

“Let this serve as another warning sign that what has happened in Michigan will continue to play out across the country. So long as Donald Trump is at the top of the ticket, Republicans will keep losing to the socialist left,” her spokesperson, Olivia Perez-Cubas, said in a statement.

The comments echo arguments anti-Trump Republicans have raised in recent days that the ex-president should be performing better in primary contests given his name recognition and status within the party. However, Trump has widely defeated Haley in every Republican contest of the 2024 race

It's official: Donald Trump wins Michigan Republican primary

Donald Trump swept to an easy victory over ex-United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley in Tuesday's Republican primary in Michigan, the first step towards claiming the state's 55 convention delegates.

Under Michigan's unique hybrid system, only 16 of the state's 55 delegates will be awarded via the primary. The rest will be allocated at a state Republican convention scheduled for Saturday.

Biden sweeps to victory over protest campaigns in Michigan

Joe Biden clinched victory Tuesday in the Michigan Democratic primary, easily beating back efforts to protest his Middle East policy by promoting an uncommitted slate of delegates.

Organizers called on Michigan voters to support an "uncommitted" option on Tuesday's ballot. They wanted to urge the president to call for a cease-fire in the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.

Biden also defeated Rep. Dean Phillips, D-Minn., who continues to challenge the incumbent president.

What does it mean to vote uncommitted?

Each party's ballot for the presidential primary in Michigan lists candidates seeking their party's nomination for the presidenc,y along with an option to vote "uncommitted." Michigan is among the states with an election law that automatically requires placing that option on the ballot. When voters cast an "uncommitted" vote, their votes are tallied and reported out just like election results for candidates.

"When a voter selects 'uncommitted' this implies that they are exercising a 'party vote' but are not committed to any of the candidates listed on the ballot," the Michigan Department of State writes on its website.

But for organizers in Michigan, voting "uncommitted" is instead a way those advocating for a cease-fire can protest Joe Biden's handling of the Israel-Hamas war. They've held phone banks and voter canvassing drives leading up to Tuesday's primary.

Nikki Haley vows to stay in the 2024 race until Super Tuesday

Nikki Haley brushed off Donald Trump’s lead in the Michigan primary on Tuesday night and reaffirmed that she plans to stay in the GOP race until Super Tuesday .

“Donald Trump campaigned in Michigan for eight years. I campaigned for two days,” Haley said during an interview with CNN’s Dana Bash. “Our goal has been to try and reach as many people as we can, but we know he's got the advantage.”

While Haley said she wanted to remain “competitive” in Michigan, she did not reveal what benchmarks her campaign is hoping to reach.

Michigan’s dueling Republican Party chairs

A Michigan judge on Tuesday barred Kristina Karamo from identifying herself as chair of the state’s Republican Party – after members voted to remove her from the position more than a month ago.

The ruling is huge victory for anti-Karamo forces in the Michigan GOP and for Pete Hoekstra, the former ambassador and congressman who was elected to replace Karamo last month. Since then, both Karamo and Hoekstra have both claimed to be the chair of the state party.

Tuesday’s decision could provide important clarity about the state's forthcoming GOP convention where the majority of the party's delegates to the Republican National Convention will officially be elected. Hoekstra has scheduled a March 2 convention in Grand Rapids, while Karamo had scheduled one in Detroit on the same date.

Lara Trump officially announces her RNC candidacy

As Donald Trump awaited results in Michigan, his daughter-in-law officially announced her candidacy for Republican National Committee co-chair.

"I promise you that I will be laser-focused on election integrity, voter turn out, and ensuring every dollar spent goes towards winning!" Lara Trump said on the social media site X, formerly known as Twitter.

Lara Trump, who has her father-in-law's backing, has sent campaign letters to all 168 RNC members ahead of their meeting next week.

The elder Trump has also endorsed Michael Whatley, the current state chair of the North Carolina Republican Party, to replace Ronna McDaniel as national RNC chair.

McDaniel said this week that she plans to announce her resignation at a March 8 RNC meeting in Houston.

Republican Ryan Binkley drops out of the 2024 presidential race and endorses Donald Trump

Republican candidate for president and pastor Ryan Binkley announced the suspension of his campaign Tuesday morning.

Binkley joined the race in April 2023, but he never gained traction in the once-crowded Republican field, finishing behind candidates who had already dropped out in early primary states like New Hampshire and South Carolina.

Binkley endorsed former president Donald Trump as he exited the race.

“Throughout my campaign, I have seen our party struggle to find a place for a new vision while weighing the corrupt allegations and indictments against President Trump,” he wrote in a post on X. “He will need everyone’s support, and he will have mine moving forward.”

Michigan's Republican primary is only part of the battle for delegates

Donald Trump is a huge favorite over Nikki Haley in the Michigan Republican primary, but that contest will award less than a third of the state's presidential delegates. The rest will be awarded at a Republican convention on Saturday.

Michigan Republicans adopted a hybrid system because of a new state law that moved up the state's primary date. The national Republican Party wanted most states to pick delegates after March 1, so the Michigan GOP came up with its two-step system.

Tonight's primary will award 16 of the state party's convention delegates; the rest will be subject to the convention on Saturday. Trump has a chance to win all of the delegates.

Rashida Tlaib said she was ‘proud’ to vote uncommitted in Democratic primary

Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., said she was "proud" to vote "uncommitted" in the Michigan primary, a kind-of protest against Joe Biden’s wide-reaching support for Israel as the Israel-Hamas war rages on.

Progressive activists have been encouraging voters for weeks to use their vote in the election to pressure the Biden administration to demand a cease-fire in the war.

She sent out a robocall earlier in the day urging members of the with the progressive political group Our Revolution to use their vote to pressure the Biden administration to demand a cease-fire in the war.

Dean Phillips signals defeat hours before polls close

Hours before polls closed in the Wolverine State, Rep. Dean Phillips, D-Minn., all but admitted defeat to Joe Biden in Michigan’s Democratic presidential primary.

Phillips announced his long-shot campaign to unseat Biden last October, but he hasn’t seen a substantial amount of voter support since. Last week, he floated the idea of a “unity ticket” with Nikki Haley, whose campaign said she is still focused on winning the GOP nomination.

“Joe Biden should receive 90% of the vote today in Michigan, no surprise when a party pro-actively prevents competition and the majority of primary voters are the party faithful,” Phillips wrote in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Phillips also encouraged voters to participate in their state's primary elections.

“If more Americans voted in primaries, the exhausted majority could quickly restore common sense to a country that needs it,” he wrote. “Be a voter and be the change!”

Donald Trump stayed off the campaign trail Tuesday, and he isn't going to Michigan to celebrate his expected primary victory.

Instead, Trump is scheduled to phone in remarks to a Republican watch party in Grand Rapids.

Who is on the ballot in Michigan's primary?

On the Democratic side, Joe Biden is facing off against U.S. Rep. Dean Phillips, D-Minn., and author Marianne Williamson. Williamson earlier this month suspended her presidential bid, saying that her campaign and supporters still "articulated deeper, more authentic truths than those regularly acknowledged by the political establishment."

On the Republican side, Donald Trump is facing off against Nikki Haley and a group of Republicans who have since dropped out of the presidential race, such as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Whether voters are supporting Democratic or Republican White House candidates, they can also choose an "uncommitted option" instead of a specific name.

Where do Nikki Haley, Donald Trump stand in Republican polls?

Donald Trump’s chances of clinching the GOP nomination are widening after his recent string of wins in New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina. And the ex-president is leading in most polls.

In a Real Clear Politics average of national polls, Trump garnered 77.3% support nationally. Nikki Haley received a mere 15.1% support.

Despite her low polling numbers, Haley has pledged to stay in the race until Super Tuesday on March 5, when 16 states head to the polls. Over a third of the 2,429 delegates in the GOP race will be awarded based on the results of elections on that day.
