Originally from Maryland, I relocated to Wilmington in July 2023.

After graduating from The George Washington University's School of Media and Public Affairs, I joined the StarNews team in October, drawn into the dynamic and locally relevant nature of the public safety and trending news position.

In just a few short months, I have already had the privilege of learning so much about the tri-county region and its diverse communities. Each day is different, offering me unique experiences and opportunities to immerse myself further into the vibrant culture of Wilmington.

While I continue to learn something new every day, here are some key insights I've gained from my experience in this role so far.

Q: What's the most challenging aspect of your job?

In my role as a public safety reporter, I'm responsible for covering crime and pertinent safety matters in Wilmington. This often involves delving into serious and challenging subject matter.

Covering distressing events, such as tragedies, accidents and acts of violence, presents inherent difficulties. My responsibility involves covering these incidents with a delicate balance between sensitivity, accuracy, timeliness and comprehensiveness.

Just as it's crucial to deliver this information to our readers, it's equally crucial to approach these topics with care and concern.

Navigating this balance efficiently is the most challenging aspect of my day-to-day job.

Q: What's the most rewarding aspect of your job?

While it might sound cliché, my answer is undoubtedly the people: the fundamental essence of what journalism is all about.

In assuming this role, I wanted to create stories that were honest depictions of Wilmington's intricacies and realities; something that would not be possible without accessible, welcoming and understanding people.

Since moving to Wilmington, I have been embraced by the local community with open arms. I am exceptionally grateful to the individuals who have been willing to share their lives with me, allowing me to learn more about their individual stories and expertise.

Forming meaningful connections within the community and being entrusted to tell people's stories undeniably stand out as the most fulfilling aspects of my job.
