Knox County Schools, other East Tennessee districts remain closed the rest of this week

It's dangerously cold outside and many streets and sidewalks are still covered in ice. That can only mean one thing: Schools are closed again - in some cases, including Knox County Schools, for the rest of the week.

It's the fourth day missing school for many students who stayed home Jan. 12 because of high winds and this week from the winter storm.

Knox County Schools Superintendent Jon Rysewyk said the district can skip eight days before school days need to be made up later in the year. Other districts have a different number because of how their schedules are structured.

If KCS goes over that eight-day limit, Rysewyk will look at scheduling options. So far, the district has used five.

Days could be made up by eliminating the remaining three early release days, turning in-service days into school days or using its two available virtual learning days per semester, which he said isn’t ideal. Days could be added to the end of the year, but Rysewyk said the district would like to avoid that.

However, Rysewyk is confident the district won’t have to use more than its three remaining days.

Here are the latest East Tennessee school closures announced. Check back throughout the day as administrators announce their decisions.
