Mousse, donuts, beer? Fall River area remakes of classic chocolate cake

There’s nothing quite like a nice slice of chocolate cake.

If you’ve had a bad day, it’s a great pick-me-up.

Had a good day? What better way to end it than with some cake?

Whether you’re in need of a little dessert boost, or you just want to have your cake and eat it too, the appeal of chocolate cake is such that it has its very own day.

Jan. 27 is National Chocolate Cake Day.

To help you celebrate, we’ve put together a list of some chocolate cake desserts that range from a classic slice of cake, to some re-imagined interpretations.

Here are just some of the many places from around Greater Fall River where you can snag a slice of chocolate cake:

Caldeiras Restaurant, Fall River

Address: 990 Pleasant St.

Hours: Sunday, and Tuesday to Thursday, from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Closed Monday

Piece of cake: The Chocolate Marquise combines two desserts, chocolate cake and dark chocolate mousse, and then covers it all with chocolate ganache. Caldeiras also has a Lava Chocolate Cake that’s full of chocolate chips, and served warm with a scoop of French vanilla ice cream.

Leddy’s Bakery, Fall River

Address: 1481 S. Main St.

Hours: Wednesday to Saturday, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Sunday, from 7 a.m. to noon; Closed Monday and Tuesday

Piece of cake: At Leddy’s, grab a cut chocolate cake donut, which has cream in the middle. You can also get a glazed chocolate cake donut, chocolate cupcakes, devil dogs, or a slice of chocolate cake, which comes with chocolate shavings or a strawberry on top.

Canned Heat Craft Beer Company, Fall River

Address: 52 Ferry St.

Hours: Wednesday and Thursday, from 5 to 9 p.m.; Friday, from noon to midnight; Saturday and Sunday, from noon to 9 p.m. Closed Monday and Tuesday

Piece of cake: This isn’t cake, exactly, but rather cake re-imagined. Canned Heat teamed up with Gregg’s to transform their fan-favorite Death By Chocolate Cake into a beer. The Death By Chocolate Stout is available as a 5-ounce or 10-ounce draft, and also canned.

Dining destinations: James Beard Award semifinalists are out. You don't have to go far to try these restaurants.

Confections, Fall River

Address: 252 New Boston Rd.

Hours: Wednesday to Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Closed Sunday to Tuesday

Piece of cake: The chocolate raspberry torte is gluten free! Flourless chocolate torte is studded with fresh raspberries and glazed in dark chocolate ganache. You can order a small or large torte, or even an individual serving.

Nancy’s Bakery, Somerset

Address: 943 County St.

Hours: Wednesday to Saturday, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Closed Monday and Tuesday

Piece of cake: How about some chocolate cupcakes? There’s the cookies and cream cupcake, death by chocolate, peanut butter cup, mint chocolate chip, and even a Milky Way cupcake.

Aimee’s Bakin’, Somerset

Address: 6 Harold Ave.

Hours: Wednesday to Friday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Closed Sunday to Tuesday

Piece of cake: Have your cake; have several different kinds of cake! Aimee’s Bakin’ signature cakes have some tempting chocolate varieties. There’s the double chocolate fudge cake, filled with whipped chocolate ganache, iced with chocolate buttercream, and decorated with more chocolate. The chocolate peanut butter cake is dark chocolate fudge cake, filled and iced in peanut buttercream, and decorated with chocolate ganache and peanut butter cups. You can order the raspberry mousse cake as a chocolate cake, filled with fresh raspberry mousse and adorned with fresh raspberries. The Nutella mousse cake can also be ordered as a chocolate cake, filled with fresh-whipped Nutella mousse, iced in Nutella buttercream, and topped with hazelnut wafer candies.

The Red Dory, Tiverton

Address: 1848 Main Rd.

Hours: Wednesday to Saturday, from 4:30 to 9 p.m.; Sunday, from 4:30 to 8 p.m.; Closed Monday and Tuesday

Piece of cake: Finish off your meal at The Red Dory with a warm, comforting dessert. You can order warm chocolate cake, served with espresso creme anglaise and toasted hazelnuts.
