Muncie shooting victim arrested for criminal recklessness

MUNCIE, Ind. — Three weeks after she was shot outside her apartment, a Muncie woman was arrested last week on a related count of criminal recklessness.

The charge, filed Thursday in Delaware Circuit Court 3 against 35-year-old Kanika Nicole Campbell, is a Level 5 felony carrying up to six years in prison.

On Jan. 2, Campbell had arrived at the Elgin Manor Apartments complex, where she resides, and was still in her vehicle when she reportedly was shot multiple times.

That night, city police arrested 19-year-old Khalil Malik McCraney, who was accused of using a rifle to shoot Campbell.

McCraney — who has since been charged in Delaware Circuit Court 3 with related counts with attempted murder, aggravated battery and criminal recklessness — told police that Campbell had earlier that day twice fired gunshots at his grandfather's home in the 1800 block of East Highland Avenue.

A detective wrote that the teenager was "very upset due to the fact that his 2-year-old sister was in the residence" when Campbell allegedly opened fire. No injuries were reported in the wake of the Highland Avenue gunfire.

The teen's father, 44-year-old Tyjuan Darryl McCraney, allegedly accompanied his son to the Elgin Manor complex. He has since been charged with conspiracy to commit aggravated battery and aiding, inducing or causing aggravated battery.

A Muncie police officer last week interviewed Campbell about the events leading to her shooting, according to an affidavit.

After at first saying she did not know why the younger McCraney had shot her, Campbell reportedly acknowledged that after a Jan. 2 altercation with another woman at the Highland Avenue address, she had "fired one round at the front door of the residence, knowing that the residence was occupied and a 2-year-old child lived (there)."

Campbell also allegedly said she had shot at the same house last September.

According to the affidavit, police recovered a 9mm handgun from the vehicle that took Campbell to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital after she was shot, and a 9mm shell casing from the Highland Avenue property.

Campbell continued to be held in the Delaware County Jail Monday under a $5,000 bond.

At the time of her arrest, she already faced three charges — driving while intoxicated, neglect of a dependent and possession of marijuana — filed against her last April in Circuit Court 3.
